n00b looking for advice ...

so i'm ready to jump in and buy my first fixie/ss ....

but i'm torn - which to get .... ?

surly steamroller
masi speciale
iro jamie roy
bianchi pista
raleigh rush hour

or does it make more sense to get a soma or pake and build it up myself .... is that even possible trying to stay in the smae $$$ range? (700ish)?

i'd like a flip-flop to start and then graduate to a full on fixie ... can i get by with just the front brake?

seriously, either one u pick will do. put all of them in a hat and pick. pick the cheapest one, those are all great to start with. eventually, when u start riding hard, u'll want to upgrade certain parts. it's common. u'll do just find with on brake, front or back. put front is better u'll love it, u'll soon be wearing cut off dickies.

I really like my Masi, but have nothing to compare it too. Regardless it gets my vote out of the list.
Also, if you will be freewheeling at all both brakes are probably a good idea.

actually, if I could have gotten a Sputnik for the same price I got my Masi I definitely would have gone that route.

i can chime in about the rush hour and tell you it's super sweet bike. the frame is rad. the parts aren't quite the shiz but if you want a solid frame, i know the rh won't dissapoint. the cranks/wheel are kinda poo but i've been riding them hard for a few months with no problems.

If your budget is around $700 then get an iro angus. A great bike for the price.

Cannondale Capo, usually $800.. you get those sexy hand-sanded Cannondale welds, and the pride of having a USA bike, if that matters at all. Big selling point: carbon fork. Absorbs shock, and lowers the weight (I weighed one, it was 18 or so pounds with the giant handlebars/front brake, which is pretty good. With component upgrades like wheels, you might be able to get it down to 16 or less). The seatpost is carbon-wrapped to match the fork.

The stock wheels are bomb-proof, but kinda weighty. Anyway, I'm planning on getting one and I'll tell you that the BBQ (matte black) paint job is very sexy.

My two cents.

The Masi is the coolest.

As to which is actually the best... I'm not really sure.
