great story.
people on the outside probably wont believe that a simple bike can help rebuild your physical and emotional strength after hitting bottom. but we know it.
you're right about suburban denver being crazy about athletics. i only lived there until i was 8, but i have lots of relatives and now my parents live out there too again so i know what its like. even before i left, some of my peers who were perfectly capable academically were being held back by parents who wanted them to be a year bigger and stronger by the time high school sports came around. pretty sick egh?
i feel pretty lucky to have grown up outside of that where the arts and doing well academically were valued ahead of sports. i can imagine what it must have been like for you growing up.

I was also the hairless wonder, but it turns out to be a great thing to not have to shave my face every day (or every week for that matter).

Interesting read.
I cannot tell however, if it is 'your story' or one from a bong induced haze. Your sentences are each exactly phrased, but they do not flow naturally from one to the next.
It reads as if you struggle to keep the story concise. By that I mean you would like to write 300 pages on this, but tried to 'dump' all the thoughts into 1000 words.
Just my inexpert 2c.
Wellcome back.

I think the short, sharp sentences is a matter of style more than anything. I really enjoy reading writing like that, especially in short story form.

Great story!
I feel that way about rock climbing! Climbing helped me break my cycle of addiction and kick the weed and get in shape! I never played team sports (thank god I was never forced) but have always been somthing of a loner team sports never appealed to me at all. When I discovered climbing a couple of years ago, I found a sport that allowed for absolute self reliance. Training for climbing satasfied the addictive nature of my personality and the outdoors aspect satasfied my thirst for adventure.
This story has inspired me to induldge my curiosity in bike racing...

I work in Greenwood Village. It sucks big-time. I hate that part of town.
Wait... someone bumped this to say
"Know why they call him mayo?"

Excellent stuff. From a new guy to an old timer; truly inspirational.
