There was a neat article about MEC in the Sun today. In spite of their hippy feel good image those guys are a very powerful and aggressive force in Canadian outdoor gear retailing, and have driven most outdoor stores in Vancity into the position of niche marketers. Because they are a coop they don't have to pay much in taxes; their donations and good works do not offset this and count as a positive contribution to PR/ advertising that normal businesses do not get merely from paying their taxes. Note that I still love getting quality, no frills outdoor stuff for cheap at MEC.

(Sorry for threadjack)

have you thought about a seat bag?

i have the patagonia pocketwire, which is the smallest they make...but every compartment is so well thought out and makes the most sense out of any bag ive tried, i can fit a grip of things in there and its very comfortable. super light, breathes very well and doubles as a hydration pack if you like. so this is a +1 for patagonia in general.

ollyisk, did you decide on a bag yet. I have had my Banjo Brothers Commuter Backpack for 2 weeks now and it is great. I have a review on http://www.bicyclesmile.com now, so check it out if you like.

i have the timbuk2 messenger back pack size med. it's a smidge big but it'll definently hold all that stuff you need without feeling too bulky. i use it everyday. it doesn't have compression straps and stuff but it's a good size to where it doesn't flap around your back if it's empty. i like it.

I have a chrome messenger bag... it is the highest quality bag I have ever seen in my life. They sell a really small version too. I have a Citizen sized bag, which fits my laptop, book, and some workout gear. They good thing is wwhen it isnt full, it colapses down to a reall small size.
