Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Yeah, right, Morgan. He makes true fixie fans look ignorant. That liar isn't going through a fresh set of pads every two weeks and nor is he replacing cassettes/freewheels/cogs/chainrings on an every-other-month basis, either.

The picture is cut off at the top but I think we can safely assume that the belt is white. Studded, perhaps.

You can't see the belt though, because of the black TRACKSTAR hoodie!

Well this fixed gear article does have one thing going for it, at least it is a trend that exists. Perhaps unlike a few trend pieces written by Stephanie Rosenbloom.

Yeah, I picked up the NYT this morning and it said that apparently a lot of young people have been seen walking around certain neighborhoods in New York City sporting shaggy haircuts and listening to music that bears a resemblance to late 70s and early 80s postpunk. Can anybody confirm this?

Jocko did the best he could under the circumstances. The interactive is really done well by a couple of people in the know. Nice picture of the Shimano product - now can Shimano sponsor my childrens program - or possibly my junior program - or anything at all. Just what was the average profit margin for Shimano last year?

I live in New York and SoCal both and Hillcrest SD looks just like the lower manhattan. Short haircuts and 70-80's music and all. There were more peirced - dyed hair - messenger bags at opening night SD velodrome watching us in the stands them on any given street on the lowereast side.

Morgan knows what's up, so don't bash him for this okay?

It is easier than you think to inflict tremendous amounts of wear in a short time while messengering, especially in bad weather.

The first thing I thought when I saw the article was exactly the same - it took the NYT this long to write a fixed-gear trend story?? I figured for sure they'd already run one. They try so hard to be on top of the trends, it's extremely bizarre that they are soooo late on this one. I mean, the Christian Science Monitor and the Los Angeles Times were onto this in 2005 (the LA Times article was far superior to the NY Times, as well). And since then, a slew of papers have written this story. However, it is often said that when the NY Times runs a trend piece, you know that trend is truly over - so maybe our long nightmare is finally coming to an end

Personally, I agree with most folks here who thought the Times story was pretty poor, but enjoyed the interactive part.

If you know Morgan (which I do) you'll know he tends to exaggerate. But his point still stands - messengers are going to wear through parts very quickly, and having a bike that requires fewer parts and less maintenance saves you money.

because skidding(or alternatively riding much much slower then you could with a brake) is much easier on parts(or more feasible for a messenger) then buying replacement pads every once and a while.

Sorry, it is probably the most disingenuous or moronic argument for brakeless ever.

I don't think he was arguing. Anyhow, I think he said riding in the rain for two weeks will destroy brake pads.

In my experience working on geared and fixed bikes:

After working in the rain and or snow all day on a geared bike you must clean and adjust your pads cables derailleur, etc.

The fixed gear requires little or no maintenance in comparison.

I got to say after a hard days work I don't want to **** with my bike too much!
