Removing Decals on a Redline 925
 

I've done some searching on the forums about this process (getting most of my info in the stripped pista thread) and I think I need some more specific instructions. Here's a picture of a redline 925's decals http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/3...db0d65.jpg?v=0


The stickers are under the clearcoat I believe, and the person in the stripped pista thread used Jasco to remove the clearcoat. Would this remove the blue/gray paint off the bike as well? I want to remove the stickers only. Is there a way to do this? Thanks

Yes it would remove the paint as well. Probably the best way would be to strip down those portions of the frame and then get it repainted to match and clearcoat it to protect the paint.

GL...I'm planning on just covering up the RL decals w/tape or stickers.

If the stickers are under the clearcoat, you should probably leave them on and just cover them up because it's really hard to get a sturdier paintjob than the one the factory put on. You might want to grab some goof-off and scrub at them a bit to make sure they're not just really solid stickers on top.

I have managed to remove decals under clear coat by heating with a hairdryer until the decal got soft, then picking at the edge, until I could peel the sticker off. The sticker will leave a lip of clearcoat around the edge where you removed it. My frame was matte clearcoat over gloss black, so I could just sand the edge smooth with wet and dry, then respray.

Being a matte finish meant you can't really see the paint job. If you have gloss or metallic under coat, you are not going to be able to sand out the lip. You may get away with some neat gloss clearcoat, doing thin coats to build up and blend over the edge, but you will still be able to see where the edge of the decal was due to the resulting lump in the finish.

You will never be able to remove clearcoated decals and achieve a factory paint finish without stripping the frame, but you will be able to have it pass from a distance and eventually, the frame will be banged up enough for you not to give a damn.

Hmm. I'm thinking of just stripping the entire thing with Jasco(?) and repainting it myself. I've been reading some threads and it seems like a feasible task.
