Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Best: riding 5 days a week with my fiance, making better time than the bus, not having to deal with rude people on the bus

Worst: only 8 miles round trip, never being able to time the lights on the last stretch of the commute

Best: the usual tail wind I get on the way in to work. This means I can leave 5 minutes later than I usually would and I can stay relatively unsweaty. Also, I get awesome stares from people passing me oh... so... slowly...

Worst: The headwind on the way home.

Best: Hitting all the lights so that I don't have to stop and unclip for them & passing the SUVs that speed past me when they're stuck in traffic after passing me. Or maybe it's riding in at 7:45 am on a sping morning when all the leaves are unfurling and the world looks green again after winter. There are so many bests!

Worst: Having to climb up a huge hill from zero mph because I work half way down one of the bigger hills on that side of town. I still haven't tried it fixed yet. I'm that chicken.

best: realizing that i can still make all the hills that i have to make, even though i have way less gears now.
also; today at least, getting to that point of being so wet that i stopped avoiding puddles.

Worst: Teaching drum lessons for five hours; soaking wet.

Best thing ever: Right after your legs get a little warmed up and you're flying all over, totally aware of all of the traffic, speeding downhill with a tailwind, sweating only a little for as fast as your legs are turning over.

Worst thing ever: Being buzzed by some dumb **** frat guy in a wannabe nice car, when you're all the way over and just trying not to get hit. Then he has the nerve to ****ing honk at you. If only that next light were red, his mirror would have been mine.

Commuting really has no downside for me because traffic is great on my route. I'm lucky I guess!
