To give a slightly different perspective, I've generally just had oblivious drivers and never had it pass far beyond "you ****ing idiot/no YOU ****ing idiot" cock-swinging. I've never had a driver explicitely threaten me or "get out of the car" ... but I did have one guy tap my wheel as I was track standing (he wanted me to just pull the bike off the road so he could get around and make a right at a red - I didn't budge and he went honk-crazy). I myself have slapped a few cars that didn't realize others share the road with them and the most violent thing that's ever happened to me in the city is breaking my hand punching a truck that almost crushed me (he didn't see me at all).

So ya, they're idiots in Toronto but I haven't had any try too hard to kick my ass yet. Watch out for the left hook when someone hails a cab though - that one's epidemic downtown.

Those are the exact kind of actions that get me in trouble. I was assaulted because I slapped a guy's hood. and I have received death threats from flipping the bird. I guess I'm just unlucky.

Ya, there's got to be something going on there. Without examining it too hard, maybe I only pull that **** when I've got a clear exit in front of me and the car can't keep up after I retaliate. Or maybe I just stfu when it's a minor/typical thing and only lash out when they REALLY **** up. I'm pretty good at the "mom shame" look so maybe that keeps people quiet too.

It's realy simple (sadly): shapelike is probably a bigger guy than you are. Drivers who attack cyclists are mostly cowards, that have their rage well in check if the cyclist looks like he could actually cause some damage.

So are wife-abusing husbands, by the way: as soon as a bigger police officer or social worker come over to them, their rage suddenly deflates and they're the nicest people in the world.

Cowards are the same, anywhere you go.

Thats not what it looked like to me at all---to me it looked like he was picking it up to prevent the motorist from kicking it

Are you people blind? He picked it up after the driver kicked the bike - he didn't want it damaged.

Besides, it doesn't seem it would have made any difference; the car driver was coming, and nothing was going to stop him - and the bicycle's wheel was the first one in his path, then came the cyclist.
I wasn't putting the blame on the cyclist. It looked to me like he was protecting himself and was using the bike to try and do so. After watching it again, I take back my comment about him trying to throw the bike.

No. But we are mind readers? Looks to me like he wanted to throw. It also looks to me like he's a bit herky jerky and his body position may not have even remotely conveyed his intentions.

End of the day, normal society doesn't go around punching each other. Or at least shouldn't. To me that is the point and where the debate should end. The car driver was at fault. Assault is assault. Unless you're in Texas, which I will be, a person's body is more valued than a car or a bike.

What they should do is make the driver ride a little pink girl's bike w/ a flower basket up front while bike messengers driving Yugos doing triple rushes swerve madly around him.

I'm 6'4", about 145lbs, and I wear trim fitting cycling clothes most of the time. I am generally well shaven and look clean. I can't figure it out myself why people try to pick on me. Its really f**king annoying actually, because I'm generally a very calm person and I personally abhor violence and fighting. My weak point is probably that I am very stubborn and can sometimes act in a self righteous fashion. Its a self control thing. I can control myself to a certian point, but if I am being purposely harrassed I will eventually break and help to escalate the situation. But that is the same as most people and doesn't really explain why I am targetted so much. I'm stronger than I look and have had a few years of martial arts training so I can defend myself if I have to.

I totally wasn't implying or suggesting that you put the blame on the cyclist, at all. Sorry if somehow it looked like I was. I might disagree with how you interpreted his movement, but I didn't think your comment was blaming the cyclist.

Yeah, you too can feel like a "Real Man"(tm) by threatening to beat me up or murder me. Boss pisses you off? Take it off out on me! Someone picked on you? Take it out on someone who you assume will be an easy victim (I won't be). The majority of people are absolutely pathetic. I may have to actually hurt one of them one day.

THE PLOT THICKENS:

Cop Charged In Bike Assault Road Rage Incident That Was Caught On Tape
Wednesday May 9, 2007
It was a crime caught on tape by some unsuspecting students taking video for a class project - a driver getting out of his car to allegedly assault a cyclist who prevented him from turning at a yellow light. The kids caught the entire thing as it unfolded at Queen and Bay on Tuesday afternoon and turned their evidence over to police. They've now made an arrest and the suspect is almost as surprising as the footage itself - he's a cop.

Constable Darius Tierman, a 21-year-veteran of the Toronto Force, has been on leave since October 2004. He turned himself in to 52 Division on Wednesday morning and made a brief court appearance at Old City Hall later in the afternoon.

Police accounts of the incident match what the kids' cameras captured. (You can see it In The Raw here). A driver is seen getting out of his car when the cyclist didn't go through the intersection at the amber signal, and then begins loudly swearing at the rider and honking his horn. As the students watched in stunned shock, he got out of the car, grabbed the bike and cold cocked the owner from behind. He then got back into the car and drove away, but not before everyone watching got his license number.

The cyclist lost a tooth in the incident, but otherwise wasn't seriously hurt.

It's not clear why Tierman has been on leave for almost three years, but the allegations he's facing are serious. He's been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Losing a tooth is pretty serious stuff, expecially a front tooth. I'd rather have a couple of broken ribs, than lose a fron tooth. Broken ribs heal after 6 - 8 months (a bit painful, I've been through, hurts when you laugh (which makes you laugh even harder, which hurts even more)), a tooth never grows back.

Edit: I meant 6-8 WEEKS not months!!!!
