Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? As someone with 2 fake front teeth (veneers, I still have some actual tooth left) I'd way rather have a broken arm than lose a tooth. I'll have to get my teeth re-veneered every 10 years or so for the rest of my life, and dentistry crap is expensive.

Is Toronto really that bad? Are the drivers worse than american cities like Boston or NYC? People warned me about the awful drivers in Montreal, but to me biking there felt much safer than any american city I've biked in.

Having lived and cycled (and owned a car) in both Toronto and Montreal, I feel that Toronto is worse for cyclists and drivers alike. Montreal drivers are a bit crazier, but there's method in their madness. A competitive culture exists in Toronto which somehow, sometimes, gets twisted into really negative aggression.

The pavement in Toronto, however, is top-notch compared to the pot-hole filled streets of Montreal.

My weak point is probably that I am very stubborn and can sometimes act in a self righteous fashion. Its a self control thing. I can control myself to a certian point, but if I am being purposely harrassed I will eventually break and help to escalate the situation. But that is the same as most people and doesn't really explain why I am targetted so much. I'm stronger than I look and have had a few years of martial arts training so I can defend myself if I have to.

I remember once, way back, when my friend, Mr. big man, 5'11", 220 pounds, all muscle tried to take on mr. 5 foot even, 104 pounds. We were in Thialand, and mr. 5 foot even was a Thai boxer. Big man took two hits to get the floor, and the second hit was done while he was on his way down.

Now, logic says that I should have jumped up to defend my friend. But, common sense said, let him lay there, drink his beer.

I have more positive encounters than bad. But really, when my encounters are bad, they are really bad.

Yeah, you're not big, you're (no offense intended) a stick. When I was 6'-2" and 170, I had tons of road raging jerks taking out their aggression against me. After I topped 220, they've become so polite it's scary.

Well, you may not need to study this one much.

From the updates on citynews website:

It's not clear why Tierman has been on leave for almost three years, but the allegations he's facing are serious. He's been charged with assault causing bodily harm but was released on $5,000 bail, along with an order to continue undergoing psychiatric care. [emphasis mine]

If not and if he's strapped for cash, howzabaout a fundraiser/bake sale to help offset his dental bill.

My gut feeling is that it would be a nice idea which I would gladly stand behind.
