is anyone using veloplugs with deep v's?
 

there appears to have been quite limited discussion about velocity's veloplugs on this forum (either that or i don't know how to use the search function very well).

they seem like a neat alternative to rim tape for several reasons (no goo from tape, supposedly don't move around or wear out, provide more space for the tube, and weigh less) and i'd like to give them a shot for my next buildup, but i'd like to get people's first hand experiences.

i'm specifically interested in their compatibility with deep v's. velocity's website claims that the plugs will fit any rim with an "8mm web hole," which includes "most of the velocity line." however, that is specific as they get and i couldn't find the specs on deep v's web holes nor any first hand success of pairing deep v's and veloplugs on the internet. somebody on a different forum claimed to have had problems:

I'm using veloplugs on my deep v's right now and they work perfectly fine. I dunno if they're actually worth the money but eh...

True - pointless question as far as we are concerned

I use them because the shop I got the rims from was out of tape at the time that I purchased them, so he gave me a good deal.

After building the wheel, and spending 10 minutes popping them into place I thought they were stupid.

..however, later on, when my chain ate three of my spokes, and I was able to remove those 3 plugs to hold the nipple steady during the replacement, I didn't mind them so much.

They're lighter according to their promotional material.

But the weight they would save is probably insignificant on a wheel with Velocity Deep V rims.

edit - 15g/wheel (assuming 32 spokes) in weight savings.

Rev-X makes them too.

I can't imagine velocity would make plugs that weren't compatible with one of their most popular rims.

I've got them on my deep V wheel. They're about a dorra more than vittoria rim strips.

I understand they are 20g ligher than Velox which is the only rim tape worth using IMHO. I think they rock just for the fact that I know they will never leave sticky crap on the inside of my rim. For $15 for 72 they only cost $5 more than rim tape since you have to buy 2 rolls anyway. An added benefit is that the shops I go to never seem to have the correct width of Velox. They either have MTB tape or the super thin crap that fits no rim I have ever seen or used. With these, you just buy'em and use'em.

either way never said anything about hopping trains other than implying that most of them have silly hopper names, I've known plenty, they each had a silly name. it's kind of like playing on-line games except train hoppers don't call themselves 1337 (leet, short for elite, for those of you who aren't hip to online game/haxor lingo).

thanks for the responses so far! glad to hear that a couple people have had success with deep v's. i think the combined benefits/advantages are compelling enough to spend 5 extra dollars, but to each her own.

also, dustinlikewhat: you've found me out . . . i'm totally on a freight train right now - amazing how some of these cargo holds are wi-fi hot spots. i'm glad to see the train companies finally making an effort to raise the standard of living for hobos and punks. but would it kill them to put in a starbucks lounge car? and i'm going to have to go ahead and reject your offer to dub me box whine, but thanks anyway.

Here's another vote for rim strips. I use the MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op) ones. They cost a whopping $2CAD (about $1.75USD), and weigh like 10g each. Super easy to install, no glue. I've been on them for close to a year now with no problems. I can't imagine ever going back to the hassle of glued rim tape, or the 64-piece (assuming two wheels) nonsense that is veloplugs.
