totaled a suicide hub

since so many people say they ride on these all the time and had no problems, here's one for the other perspective. I was dinking around on my trash bike last night and doing a skid felt the cog slip. the hub has probably less than a mile on it. the cog was rotofixed on and sealed with red loctite and I was using a BB lockring also with red locktite. running 42x16 and i'm about 200 lbs. I wouldn't put a lot of faith into this kind of setup for sure now.

Im 280lbs and I can skid all day long on my suicide hub. I put the cog on w/ JBweld. I actually wanted it off about a week ago.... its not coming off. BTW, it was on my urban MTB 32x18

Yeah JB Weld is another realm I think. The thing is I see people saying like they just rotofix and that's it and skid all day. well maybe i'm doing it wrong or something but the odds just don't look that good to me.

Why not just use your rear brake for skidding?

suicide hub + back pedal pressure skidding= bad idea
suicide hub + F & R brakes= good idea

brakes useage is MUCH cheaper on not stripped hub threads and tires.

why not turn this thread into a brakes/no brakes debate?

I used blue loctite on my suicide hub. I run a front brake on that bike though, but that's because it's setup with a front and rear pannier racks and BOB nuts for my trailer, so sometimes skidding (or attempting to do so at least) is just a bad idea ;-) No problems with the hub backing off ... even when I toured w/about 65 lbs of gear. You just have to make sure your threads are cleaned from grease and junk for the loctite to stick well.

And with the blue loctite, I was still able to remove the cog when I needed too :-)

I haven't had any problems with my suicide hub on my beater. It's all about the prep work: clean all the threads including cog and lockring thoroughly, wire brush the threads, clean again, let dry, apply red loctite, rota fix cog, tighten lockring, and let dry a couple days.

I weigh 200lbs
