coming through your fair city (assuming YOU live there) in a week and a half on my honeymoon...
any good advice on vegan/vegetarian (or straight up carnivorous) eats?
DRINKING... already have 21st amendment, toronado and zeitgeist on the list...

and advice on random stuff to do would be appreciated also

For vegetarian/vegan:

Golden Era (http://www.goldeneravegetarian.com/) is a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant. The food there is pretty decent, and this is from a meat eater. Of the stuff I've had there, the pho is good if you're not expecting real authentic pho, and the claypots are are okay as well. I'm a big fan of eggplant and I think their braised eggplant dishes (garlic/spicy, etc.) are good.

Maggie Mudd (http://www.maggiemudd.com/index.asp) for dessert has vegan and non-vegan ice cream. I'm not too impressed by the flavors, but the BF who's vegan loves the place. Their non-vegan flavors just taste like ordinary ice cream to me. Nothing to write home about.

There's also a health-food type veggie restaurant called Herbivore in San Francisco, but I thought it was awful the one time I went there. The place seemed way too hip and the food I ordered was comparable to canned dogfood. The vegan BF seems to like it okay but I wouldn't go there again.

you might want to try herbavore in the mission, or cha ya for some sweet vegan japanese food. if you wanted to get some reviews on these, go to yelp.com . .it's updated pretty frequently.

Eats

+1 On Golden Era, it's awesome. Spicy Mongolian "Chicken", Szechuan Pinapple "Beef", and get a Buddha Bun.

Greens is nice, but the atmosphere (and price) definitely outweighs the food. It's cool that it's prixe fixe and they've got really quality ingredients, but for the kind of place it was I expected a lot more flavor.

Herbivore - it's hit or miss. I like the food a lot. Some people don't. Both locations have so-so service, can get pretty busy on peak hours, and can be drafty and noisey. However, if you go at an off hour and get a nice seat it can be great.


Drinks

Magnolia (Haight and Masonic) good food and even better beer. It's the sister brew-pub to 21st amendment and should not be missed. They've usually got a couple vegetarian food selections, but mostly you are looking at meat. I recommend getting some fries, a plate of hotwings, and a sample tray of beers. My favorite is the Cole Porter and the couple of stouts they usually have. They tend to make better darker beers than lighter ones in my opinion.

Gestalt, in the Mission. Beer, brats, bikes.
Also- do a bike ride through golden gate park and end up by the ocean at Park Chalet. I can also hook you up with a friendly route for a brewpub tour on bikes. By the ballpark, there's TRES AGAVES tequilla bar. If you're going for burritos (coma logs), make sure it's a place where they don't steam the tortillas; it makes a big difference. Heaps of good sushi here. Weather permitting, there is a nice romantic french place in the financial district called PLOUF. Its got outdoor seating in a closed off narrow street, called Belden Place, really nice at night.

Go to Zante's and get the vegan Indian Pizza...I drove from LA just to get it.. jesus christ it's SO good...

if it was my honeymoon, I'd make at least one reservation at millenium

best quality vegan food = millenium
best romantic vibe / view = greens
excellent vegan + raw = cafe gratitude (9th / Irving)

maybe skip herbivore unless you're hungover.
it's like vegan comfort / I'm-too-lazy-to-cook food.

Goldern Era is top notch.

nacccs 07 is going on memorial weekend you shoudl check it out it will be a good time racing and competing or not

Emmy's Spaghetti Shack and the Front Porch are nice for cozy eatin' & drinkin' too.

feel reel cafe is pretty good heatlth/vegan food. I think it's on 42nd and Judah over by ocean beach. they have weird hours as they're all hippies. Last time I was in town they were closed because they were traveling through the rainforests somewhere. they have a sliding scale pricing system too, so you pay what you think the food was worth. cool atmosphere and tasty eats.
