compatability with BMX parts

I'm wanting to build up a SS road bike conversion with a lot of BMX components. Specifically, pedals, chainwheel, chain, and brakes will probably be BMX, if possible. I'd like to run a flip-flop hub, fixed on one side. Can I run a fixed cog with the BMX chain? Any other conflicts I'm overlooking? This is my first build from scratch, and I want to get this right. Thanks, all.

I don't see any problems unless the BMX chainring you want to run is of the one piece variety. Bulletproof brand bmx cranks, and 1/8" bmx chains are commonly used on fixies. Fixed cogs come in 1/8" as well as 3/32", so if you want to use an 1/8" chain and chainring, just pick an 1/8" fixed cog and go to town. if the brake reach works out with your fork/wheels, you should be fine there too.

yeah, bmx cranks that aren't square taper, like bulletproof or whatever, will need separate bb, etc. 3 piece bmx cranks are pretty rad, though. i'd like to use some on a fix sometime.

Primo Cranks are square taper, I had Profile cranks on my bike for sometime but BMX parts are made to take lots of abuse and tend to be heavier parts. If you're not concerned about weight, go for it. Otherwise I'd keep it minimum with BMX parts.

BMX pedals don't make much sense on a fixed, but if you like the looks and don't want clips/clipless you might as well use them.

That's a different kind of square taper. Primo's also have a pinch bolt to keep them on the spindle, and the spindle isn't tapered like a road/track spindle.

One step farther: A BMX stem? I'm seriously working on a vision here.

You beat me to it! I love that bike.

I Know, It Looks Way More 80's Bmx Than Those Trackstar One That Were All The Rage

I love this concept, especially with old junky road frames that have the BB shell for a 1 piece crank and could take some abuse. The basso is awesome, but, um, it's a basso.

Also, once you build one of these you have to jack the front wheel from your sister's scooter and ride it around Beavis and Butthead style for a while.

YES! Exactly what I'm thinking. Now I'm all excited and smiley.
