Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Is this a good buy thread?

Is this a good buy thread?

So maybe this will work but instead of having a bunch of individual threads asking about what is a good buy we could bunch this in one (pics are def useful). I'll start:

So can get a used pair of Time Atacs for $20. Is this a good buy?

Owner: Good used pair of Time ATAC pedals. These have the chromo spindle. Bearings are still very nice and smooth.
What you see is what you get. Great for cyclocross - still the best!

Probably not since cleats don't come with them. Add that price factor in and decide if it's worth it. I say no.... buy new pedals.

They have some use. Those are dual entry, get a look at the other side the plates will cost another $15 to replace and they do break.

Not a bad idea for a thread, but watch out, people will search cl and whatever if they see where you are located and try and snipe your deal I almost snagged a miche cs this way not long ago (but seller refused to ship out of state )

On different note, I'll just ask, I was thinking it would be a good idea to start a thread for "hot deals" spotted out there, along the same premise as fatwallet.com

yes? no?

yea your right. some folks are conniving like that including you *snicker, snicker* but at least it worked out for the original poster of the deal

the hot deals thread seems cool but some may say it's just another ebay/c-list thread where already you have good enough deals there as it is. you know what i say...who cares what others think and go for it. this a forum and what you want to do is perfectly fine because it's within the rules. plus it does have a different premise from the ebay thread since you can talk about how to save, what to look out for and so on. yea go for it. i'll contribute to the best of my ability

I say nay. I have 2 pairs, a pair of the C and a pair of the SL, and I wouldn't eff with anything lower grade than the Eggbeater C.

I LOVE LOVE my Eggbeater SLs, like...LOVE.

Those look like quite old ATACs.. I would have said yes, but you could probably do better. Of course, if you're just planning on riding infrequently, or you're just trying out clipless, you may be fine. If you're commuting or racing, get better ones.

The Eggbeaters.. I'd try them, although you can get some C's for 45 elsewhere.

VEGGIEMAFIA: what difference do you notice in the SL's vs. the C's? Because my cleat creaks and clicks around occaisonally, and in general they're too easy to get into and out of.

You can get new ATACs (granted, the less stylin' modern ones) online for $45 with cleats - http://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...um+Pedals.aspx. Since the cleats cost $20, I'd say you're better off buying new and having a warranty.

nice! thanks. do these function in the same way as the higher models? Is the weight issue what make this a lower model? I've tried spd and personally was kind of spooked when i myself unclipped on 2 occasions and also have heard all about how much they suck. i hear its almost impossible to unclip on atacs because of it retention method. am i misunderstanding this?

unless you had the tension improperly adjusted you probably clipped out of the spds by twisting your foot and you can do that with any pedal.

These are cheap because they are the older aliums but still newer then the ones you posted. The newer xs/xe models work better.

****er.

granted, i knew the risk, and i only feared the chance of someone in the cities grabbing them, since most people on craigslist aren't going to waste time dealign with someone out of state.

I have both the mxr and c beaters. The c is a big jump in quality. Spins smoother, lighter, etc. No probs with mxr, but get the c if you can swing the few extra dolleros.

I think those are the current alium models - I haven't seen anything newer looking. It's the bottom of the line, and they're a lot heavier / uglier than the higher end versions, but I think the mechanism is basically the same minus the tension adjuster. My only complaint is that they tend to creak.

Honestly, if you don't mind the aesthetics, the new ATACs are probably the way to go.. I sold mine for eggbeaters, and I sort of regret it. If I had two pairs of shoes, I'd have kept them.
