Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

mist ride

hi all,

today it was rainy and dank in the morning, and after work/in the evening it was really really misty...not rain, and not quite foggy, but really misty. i jumped on the fixed gear and decided to ride about. up and down various streets, ripping around corners, generally just going wherever my thoughts took me. feeling the warm/cool breeze and mist on my legs, arms, face, dripping off of my helmet and off my beard. i felt like the bike and i were one item, as only a fixed gear can allow you to feel, gripping the bullhorns and cranking away, continuous motion, and just a slight noise of water spraying off of the tyres. it was glorious.

in the end i ended up stopping and going into canadian tire to get an attachment i needed for the torque wrench so later i could properly install a 10sp cassette on a rear wheel for my roadie(that belongs in another sub forum, however). upon exiting the store i saw my bike chained up to the cart stall (or whatever the hell those are called). I had to stop and admire the beauty of the bike, sitting there, all by itself, the only bike in the parking lot, dripping in clear mist water, waiting for me to jump back on. it was the best moment of the day. needless to say i took the loooooooooooooong way home. i am still buzzing off of it. just the joy of riding in the mist.

i hope all of us can have moments like this more often, because it is what makes biking so great.

cheers
