BMX chainrings and cogs...

Sorry for what is probably an annoying question, but the search function here just isn't too efficient.

If I decide to use a bmx style crank and chainwheel setup on my mtb conversion, do I need to get a bmx specific rear cog in order to run a bmx chain?

I'm asking because I'm not sure what type of cog comes with the single spped kit I plan on getting.

Thanks.

No. You can run just about any cog with a BMX chain.

Well, what kind of rear hub are you using?

If you are using a "track" (screw-on) style hub, then you can use a bmx freewheel. If you are using a cassette hub, you need a cassette cog.

BMX shops/stores sell both kinds- each will work with your setup, but your rear hub dictates what kind you need.

It's a standard shimano mountain bike rear hub.

I guess my main question is if I want to use a bmx chain, what chainwheel/rear cog do I need. The cogs that come with the nashbar/jensen kits don't say.

as far as the width of the cog/chainwheel, either one will work (3/32 or 1/8) granted the chain is a 1/8 bmx chain... some say running the 1/8 chain with a 3/32 cog/chainwheel is louder, i can't tell the difference

If the only difference is a little noise, I can live with that. :) I have several bmx chain lying around so I'd rather utilize those than buy a new one.

The cogs that come in the Nashbar/Jensen kits will work with any chain 3/32" or 1/8" or even wider if you want to. And they will work with your hub too. Sounds like you are golden.
