Dude. Show it. Forget the haters. You'll always find peeps that don't like your bike, you should get used to it. You'll also find peeps that like your bike, so it'll balance out.

And ultimately, if YOU like it, that's all that counts.

And they love to grab light standards, bridge railings, mirrors, small children and people running across the border all while throwing yo ass to the curb.

I'm already wide enough, sticking my arms out like Jesus slows me down. I have had entire pelotons drafting me.

^^^ only if you ride in such a way that you are too close to those things. *shrug* I rode on narrow bars for about 3 weeks before I went wide, and in one year of riding wide risers I've never hit a light standard, bridge railing, mirror, small child, or people running across the border.

I would say... ride better.

Yeah, 16 years of pro bmx doesn't really help. I should find time for some lessons on riding soon.

34 inch wide bars is silly. 10 inch wide bars is silly. You're missing the point.

I have come way to close to being an SUV-SEPTA bus sandwich, if it weren't for skinny bars I'd be toast. I like em about 3-4" narrower than shoulder width, but now I have 42cm pursuit bars that are a tad too wide.

Good on ya. I raced BMX too. Not for 16 years, but I've been riding consistently since I quit BMX in the 80s, so that lands me at... twenty plus years?

Doesn't mean sh1t, though.

What we're dealing with, here, is rider comfort. It's not up to you to tell a rider what works for him or what doesn't. *YOU* may ride so aggro and be so BMXed out that wide bars put you in a dangerous situation, but not everyone rides like you. If someone likes and is comfortable with wider bars, and they aren't all aggro and BMX like you and don't randomly run into things with their bars, then that's their deal.

Dude, you're insane. I spend most of my time riding on a mountain bike with 30+ in wide bars.

I'm assuming you're talking about the star nut -- if you're able to cut the steerer below the star nut, then you can just nudge the nut out of the removed/detached steerer piece with a wooden dowel (or something else), and then push it back into the remaining steerer on the bike, about .5 inches down, so that it's the right placement for the stem bolt to screw down into.

Oops, actually, I originally thought you were talking about trimming the steerer/fork down. If you're talking about trimming handlebars, I'm not sure where the threaded aspect comes in...

Okay, I'll show it:

Let's not let the thread derail too much. It just irked me that someone forgot the unspoken "if you can't say something constructive, don't say anything" rule understood by most internet users (except YouTube commenters).

I agree that the bars on that particular bike (the green one) are too high and too wide, and that the cable routing is funky, but I think there are kinder, more helpful ways to point that out; ways that can be helpful and inclusive, and further someone's interest in cycling, rather than catty and snide. Remember, it's not a contest, it's an activity we all share an interest in. Also, keep in mind that the level of mechanical experience is generally pretty low in this thread--there's nothing wrong with someone assembling a bike as delivered, then making changes as they gain knowledge, tools, and experience.

So, let's all take a deep breath and refocus on having fun with bikes. Feel free to tell me how lame my bike is, too.

I liked this forum more when I was in read only mode. I think it will revert to that.

Yeah, I always like reading this thread and since I found a group buy IRO, I wish the IRO pic threads had taken off a big as this one.

IIRC, there was an IRO group buy picture thread. I think the Kilo TT way outsold the IRO group buy, though.
