I have a 48x16 setup and don't have too much trouble riding around LA. So much of the city is flat, that it's nice to have the extra speed for the majority of my riding. And no...I do not resemble the hulk in any way.


The one skid patch thing is a bit annoying though.


Ohh, and my brother just ordered his Mercier. I can't wait to check it out.

it all depends on what your endurance is and what hills you're doing. i was down in southern OC and the hills there are impossible on anything over 70 for me.

I also still have the 48x16 setup, but it's a touch steep on some slight and long hills. It's really nice the rest of the time though.

hey guys! this is my first ever post and figuring out what bike to get as my first fixie.

I was planning to get an iro mark v 53cm but then i saw this thread and you guys have made me debating over the mercier kilo tt 50cm and just swap out some parts later on. any suggestions? thanks!

get the mark V. you won't have an itching to upgrade if you get something you like out of the box... if you get something you knowingly want to upgrade, that bug will bite hard and you won't be able to get it off your back once it turns into a monkey. giraffe. unless you are totally cool with having the stock mercier components for a few months... just don't kick yourself for taking the low road and wanting all the stuff that you don't have on the mercier unless you know you can deal with it for your first fixed gear.

both are great starter bikes... it all depends on what you want, how much you want to spend, and if you can get the iro from a dealer who will support it if something breaks. since bikesdirect doesn't actually assemble the bike, it's going to be hard to prove that a faulty component wasn't just installed improperly. that said, i've never dealt with iro nor bd so that's a purely hypothetical scenario... bd may have awesome customer service with no questions asked... i've never had an issue so i wouldn't know.

the mercier is sweet as is, don't get me wrong... but it's only flashy and unique if you build it up custom the way you want it... and it will be an entry level bike unless you upgrade virtually every component.

i love love love mine... but for the money i spent on it i could have a far less cool IRO, and if i had spent my money smarter than i did on my bike it could be truly, unquestionably awesome... IE a better wheelset for the money i spent on my wheelset and a better stem/headset/crankset instead of tires, extra handlebars, and multiple items(i have 5 bars, two stems, and a bunch of random sale items that i "couldn't pass up"... if i had passed them up i would have had more money for very cool stuff like mid-to-top-range name brand parts or new cranks or whatnot).


i guess, even if you get the iro, you still may want to build it up custom... but if you're going to be spending three to six bens, spend it on the stuff you really want and sell the stuff you don't really want. no one's going to buy the stock components from either of those bikes for more than a ten or twenty spot so you're better off getting the one with better components unless you want to spend significantly more than the cost of the frame building it up.

don't get the IRO unless you really like it... with an IRO you have the option of going to a store that distributes/sells them and actually making sure it's what you want in-the-flesh so to speak.

the mercier is great for :
1. those who want a fun fast-as-nuts bike that they can buy, build, and get moving on for very little money, a bike to ride stock that's very inexpensive
2. those who want to save money on the stock bike/frame so they can build it up custom and drop a lot of coin on the build
3. those that don't want fancy components(maybe an around-town beater bike...) and can ride like eddie merckx on anything and want to show off their skills on a very basic beginner's bike.

it's a great frame for an unbelievable price, but if you aren't happy with stock for whatever reason, it leaves more to be desired than the IRO.

you sound like you're between 1 and 2... and the way i see it, the IRO is better for those between the numbered definitions... if you'd be happy with *some* modification but definitely nothing over $100 put in on top of the bike's cost, the mercier could cut it but the IRO will be better. (inbetween 1 and 2). if you're just looking for an entry level bike that you can upgrade, or not, to your liking--and may just ride stock because you can ride anything like a trackstar: then you're inbetween 1 and 3 and the IRO again is probably the better choice.

anyway this is a bunch of student-procrastinating-on-his-work advice so i'll just say get whichever you like better and don't worry about any advice i give you... what do i know anyway. not much.

i'm ordering my kilo tomorrow or the next day. i'm excited.

if i wanted to go total, all out hipster:

carbon fork

aerospoke or hed3 up front

pink deep v in the rear, laced to phil

shorter stem/pink anodized headset spacers

black anodized cranks and zen chainring

i hope to goodness someone builds a more tech/hip/expensive/ridiculous kilo than me. someone's gotta have one... please post up.

in the end i guess i do want a unique custom fixed with sugino 75s, some deep v dubs, nice matching nitto stem, seatpost and bars . i really like the track geometry on the mercier and i guess i can just hang with the parts until i have to replace them. i'm a broke student too and i think it'll do for the time being instead of just splurging on a decant iro that i'll probably upgrade anyways. oh the choices of life, its grand. thanks a lot for the suggestions cc700 it has helped a lot if thats any consolation for your procrastinating.

Do you guys have any idea how many individual Kilo TT threads this particular thread prevents? It's gotta be like four-per-day.

which is why i love it so, because i can frequent it like a lady of the night and no one complains.

is that frameset only in 53, or are they just out of everything else for the moment?

they're just low on stock. shipment should be coming in for the completes, the frameset may take more time i'm not sure.

if you PM him on here he usually gets back to you with a time estimate within a day or two.

i posted mine a few pages back i think...want to post it again cause i subtracted and added some things. it needs a paint job because of a trip i took to Florida. still need to order a different stem, handlebars, and upgraded tires.

everything else is gravy now. love my bike and with the new cycling techniques i've read about on here has made this bike a lot faster.

mine came today, weird but awesome. the only thing is i dont have any room for it since i wasnt expecting it for about another week. i guess i'll just have to shove some **** aside and make some. in a week or so when i get paid im going to order a new cog and lockring and maybe some new bars. color me stoked.

btw, bikeisland now has the Kilo TT black frame (no decals, no fork) for $145 or so shipped...
