I have a friend that works at a bike shop. He is threading the fork and said it shouldn't be a problem. And yes Im getting silver open pros. The only black part on the bike is going to be the tires.

I remember reading about someone's handlebars being totally messed up quite a ways back (they spun like they shouldn't have). The reason I bring this up is because I was thinking of flopping and chopping the stock bars. Are they low enough quality that this would be a bad idea or could I use them for a while to figure out if I really want to get bullhorns?

beethaniel 02-13-09 01:49 PM

you can get a decent pair of bullhorns cheap. If you chop your bars, then you ruin a pair of drops that you might end up wanting to use.

no, that rotating effect had to do with the reinforcement sleeve on the bar where the stem is supposed to clamp. i mean, yeah, the stock kilo bar has that sleeve but it's not really an indicator of quality per se.

Is that bike a 57 cm frame? im looking for a kilo but dont know what size to get because of all the frame size confusion. IM 6' 2" and growing.

Thanks

Sorry to revisit this common newbie question, but there seems to be some discrepency in frame size. If I fit the typical 56 frame, would I go with a 53 or 55 kilo tt? I'm 6'1" with a 32 inseam.

beethaniel 02-14-09 08:23 PM

The 53cm is sized like a 54-55 roadbike. You should prolly get a 55cm, as a 56cm roadbike seems a bit on the small side for you.

Read this article on bike sizing on Rivendell's website. After doing research into the proper way to size a bike, this article makes the most sense to me. You will have to alter your findings a bit since a lot of track frames (the Kilo included) have a higher bottom bracket shell, which affects the seattube length. Otherwise this has helped me understand the proper way to fit a bike and kept me from buying too small of a frame.

Not so much a sizing issue but a sizing question none the less.

How comparable is a 55 Pista to a 55 Kilo?

JayNev 02-14-09 11:22 PM

put raceblades on today. pretty cool. i know its kind of jackass due to the kilo having fender mounts, but oh well. easy on, easy off, easy install, no fighting with clearance

So I recently put together a Kilo build from bikeisland and I have a question. I have a thompson seatpost for this bike. I've been lowering the saddle height so that my friend can ride it, and when she's done I'd adjust it back to my height. Here's the problem: when I tighten the seatpost clamp, it seems like everytime I adjust it, I have to tighten it tighter/harder for the seatpost to not move left to right. I fell last night and I noticed the saddle moved a bit, so that means the clamp wasn't tight enough.. My question is, is something being warped? Seatpost, the seatpost clamp, or the frame itself?

Not sure the cause of this, maybe stripping is occurring. Is the post greased? However, the clamp should have a torque rating and if you are over tightening past the rating it will be bad for it and if you are under tightening the seat will move.

speeed 02-15-09 12:57 PM

The frame has the frame saver in it. There's only that, no grease. Also, if I am over tightening it, which part would ruin first? The frame?

The clamp/nut will get ruined. Nothing will go wrong with your frame.

Thanks for the advice and the helpful link. I will be ordering the 55 today and waiting until the end of march to get it :twitchy:

I'm 5'8" with a 30 inseam. 53cm be a safe bet?

beethaniel 02-15-09 08:34 PM

^^^read the article in the post above yours. Measure your PBH and check out the sizing chart on bikeislands website. Im about your size, and my 53cm fits perfect.

gutsofgold 02-15-09 09:21 PM

I've done the sizing method mentioned in that article and it came out that a 53 c-to-c would be about right. I was just unsure as a few posts before mine were on the topic of the Kilo frames being sized differently than other road frames.

Try to ignore the size of the frame for a second, and look at that article again. Figure out what you need in terms of your physical requirements, like standover height, saddle height, and top tube length.

The seat tube of a track specific bike will be shorter than a road frame that matches your body, but that is about it. With a road bike people tend to use longer cranks (they are more efficient) but you can compensate for that with saddle height. And you can compensate for less reach with a shorter stem and different bars.

All in all you should fit a 53cm Kilo about right.

I'm not sure about true track geometry, but I'm 6'1 and ride a 59CM. 56CM is to small for me. I stick to 57CM-59CM.

Of course I know everyone is different, but just so you have an idea.

Go to your LBS and ride a whole bunch of bikes(regardless if its track(fixed) or not. Then narrow it down by its geometry

Anything wrong with running a 48/15 setup?
Thanks

It's 84.1 gear inches (with 23c tires), which can be tough up hills and slower to start from a standstill, but I guess there are people that run that many gear inches. Personally I like around 70, it makes acceleration and slowing down easier.
