Your bars are one piece, but that one piece is shimmed in the middle, and usually that shim is riveted to the actual handlebar. It would appear as though yours were not. The bars are not safe to ride under any circumstances, least of all brake-less. I would email Mike at Bikes Direct and tell him, and I'm sure he'll send you a different pair of bars, or you can just use this opportunity to buy something different that might suit you better. Bars are cheap and plentiful - you should be able to find something else for less than $20 online or in a store with lot of old-stock and pull-off gear.

i just put a 17t on mine and didn't have to do anything to the chain. and yea, spend $10-15 online for a dura ace lockring. as far as tires go, i shelled out the money for gatorskins and love em. i was getting about a flat a week with those kendas and i haven't had one at all in the weeks that i've had my gators.

make sure that the cog you buy is a 3/32, otherwise you gotta buy a 1/8 chain

Thanks for all the gear ratio responses. I am going to go with 48/17 and see how it feels. I cant imagine it being that different than 48/16.

I feel like an idiot asking this but how can i wheelie/manual/cat walk/long wheelie with my kilo? would i need a different gear ratio?

edit: that was directed at dewthedews post, but for mobolegumes, i think that 48/18 might be a bit easier to skid, but then you will lose the 17 skid patches that 48/17 gives you.

I think it's more dependent on timing. Much like skid stopping. Shifting your weight back and pedaling forward all at the right time. Remember, best way is cranks at 12 and 6.

I don't think you can fit a 18 on that 48 chainring with the stock chain. I've got about 1-1.5mm of space between the hub bolts and the end of the track ends. 48/17 is good for skidding/skip-stopping.

Hello and thanks for your interest in our frames. we are expecting the container of frames any day now. Dealing with container companies, shipping lines, rail yards, and trucking firms is not an exact science. I receieve about a 4 days notice that the container is in town and will be at my door within x number of days. I wish I could give you an exact date.

Will the 17t bolt on the same place as the 16t cog? I cant lock up my legs while sitting down at 48/16, will 48/17 let me do this?

what kind of hubs do you have? bolt on?

and no, the skid's in the technique.

you may be able to do it if you go for 42/20 but it's all technique.

I can't even skid sitting down on a 48/17, I can skip-stop sitting down if I use proper technique.
