Godverdomme!

Stembreakage to faceplant.. ouch. :o

I've had bars breaking on me, but this is new. Ofcourse happened while racing through the street, on the phone.. I'm okay though, only a bit of cuts and bruises. And luckily, my bike seems fine. Just wanted to show you guys.

Anyone else had stems break on them? Let's hear them horrorstories!

vee_dub 06-05-07 03:50 AM

OH DAMNNNN..sounds dangerous.
aye watup with ur chain? looks like it snapped tooo!!???

streetlightpoet 06-05-07 04:02 AM

Glad to hear it didn't end up worse for you. That would be some scary **** to have happen in traffic, not that I am guessing you'd have much time to realize what was happening? So did it just suddenly snap clean or was there any sort of warning?

25.4 mm MTB bar ... is the stem made for 25.4 bars or it's a road stem made for 26.0 mm bars dangerously overtight??

Nice to know you're OK

^oZ 06-05-07 04:23 AM

It just suddenly snapped, no creaking sounds or whatever. The stem is a 25.4.

I really wonder how this could happen, it's ITM so definately no ****..

Was it a flip-top deal, or a standard pinch bolt?

skinnyland 06-05-07 07:22 AM

Your toe clips disappeared, too!!! ;)

SS w/ brakes!

Sad to here about the mishap. I actually saw your bike yesterday milling about the internet and thought that giant fork looked pretty rad on an older lugged frame.

Where the stem holds the bars; was it a flip-top or removable face, or just a standard pinch-bolt closure? I can't really tell from the pictures (maybe I'm dumb?)

Igneous Faction 06-05-07 10:20 AM

From what I can see, it has the pinch bolt coming from the bottom up into the neck of the stem. The "hidden" bolt kind of stem.

I read an online article about how these were more prone to failure then a regular stem with the pinch bolt going horizontally through the bottom. But hey, who knows?

^oZ 06-05-07 11:23 AM

It's a standard pinch-bolt closure. This one lived for about 4 weeks, I'm going to replace it by a similar one, let's see if that one holds.

I can't wait to impale myself on a snapped stem...one day it will happen.

My first ever BMX race a kid broke his stem off about 1" above the headset, and stabbed himself in the stomach. He had to be life flighted out
