A cyclist was hit last night at a crossing of one of our bike trails and a busy road. I was riding the path about a minute behind when the man was hit. Witnesses say his bike was thrown 30 feet into the air. The man was so mangled. It kind of ****ed me up. Ride safe today.

lots of people do say riding on the sidewalk is dangerous. you say he was crossing a street which makes me think he was riding on the sidewalk. jeez. that's crazy.

yeah, i reread it. either way. crossing the street from a bike path or at an intersection and riding on the sidewalk are both places that drivers don't look for cyclists to shoot out from.

It was at Comanche and the arroyo trail. The driver didn't stop, but came back about a half hour later as I was leaving once the ambulance left. I felt so helpless. I haven't been able to find out his name yet, but there is a little quip on the channel 13 news site.

My mom saw a pedestrian get runover and mangled under a car.
She was in therapy a long time to try to get over that.
Her direct encounter with death was a bad thing.

It's always very sad to hear things like this and assigning blame really doesn't change the fact that someone else family will have to be dealing with a great sense of loss.

I was riding home last fall and although I wasn't looking in the direction of the accident I heard the screech of the tires and the sound of a body hitting the vehicle... it's same dull thunk that deer make when you hit them.

I was less than a block off and when I came on to the scene I saw an older woman lying in the middle of the road with a van some 40 feet from where she was lying. Folks were already working to help her and there was a doctor on the scene as he had been following the van that hit her. I directed traffic to speed the rubberneckers through and allow the emergency vehicles access.

After the paramedics put her in the ambulance they were in no hurry to leave and I realized that I had just watch this woman die... it was impossible not to see how badly injured she was but I will not get into the gory details.

I was really disturbed by this as besides witnessing a tragic death, it made me think that I have come very close to being in that same place after experiencing many close calls while riding. I also stopped riding down that street for some time afterwards as when I did, my mind would hit the rewind button and play everything over again..

Take care of yourself man... stuff like this can mess you up.

I'm really sorry for what you experienced. Find someone to talk to about this if you are having a hard time with it. Teh internets aren't very good at listening.

I've seen two cyclists get hit and it's a very scary experience. Both cyclists were riding on quiet side streets, both were hit by maniac drivers. I think both of the guys I assisted made it, though both left the scene incoherent and seriously injured. Even that messed with my head for a while, so I can only imagine with this must be like.

jesus. this past couple weeks iv been reminded every day in different ways of how necessary helmets are. whether its my friends talking about how they were hit or my gramma dying and seeing the effects on my family or this thread. please people be safe. and wear a helmet.
