installing grips!? have tried everything!

have tried the following:

~ hit grip with hammer. no install!
~ put grip in vice. tighten losen and repeat.
~ look at grip with mean-face
~ use vacuum on grip
~ put grip in litter box for 20 minutes and remove grip from litter box
~ put grip under coffee table
~ put grip on top of coffee table. also to the left and right of coffee table.
~ look at grip with sad-face
~ hit grip with handlebar, like with hammer. almost seem to work. work better than hammering grip alone.
~ touch grip to ear. hear only ocean.
~ put grip behind toilet, look at handlebars, close eyes. still no work.
~ tape grip to cat, hit cat.
~ put pencil in grip, set grip on desk. make angry-face.
~ put grip near telephone, put handlebar near to grip. call telephone from other room. does not even answer.

grip are no possibles to insatll.

Old trick I used to use for BMX grips:
- Spray inside of grip with (cheap) hairspray.

SpiderMike 06-07-07 01:47 PM

John Waters wrote something about stuff that works for what you are trying to do.

MajikMan 06-07-07 01:48 PM

wtf?

Just spray the inside of them with some hairspray, water or ammonia and slide them over the bars before it dries.

Be sure to keep a spare set of grips taped to your cat at all times.

See, there's the problem. You don't use the vacuum on the grip itself. You line up the grip with the end of the bars and attach the vacuum to the other end.

You're on your own for how to get the other grip installed, though.

macsaorsa 06-07-07 01:54 PM

Have you tried putting the end of the bars into the open end of the grip and pushing? It sounds crazy, but it just might work!

i use rubbing alcohol because 1 it evaporates and 2 the hairspray didn;t work, but i needed to wrap the bar with electrical tape anyways.

Aeroplane 06-07-07 02:31 PM

Rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover (acetone) will make it slippery enough to get on and evaporate quickly. If you have access to an air compressor, that will help too.

queerpunk 06-07-07 02:33 PM

tape grip to wall.

extend handlebar forward.

run at grip-on-wall.

fattymcbastard 06-07-07 02:35 PM

spit and effort. thats all it should take... what kind of grip, what kind of bar?

won't the alcohol and acetone eat some plastic away? i used to use wd40 and a day in the sun and viola no problems.

Batson 06-07-07 03:26 PM

Buy grip beer, add Flunitrazepam (roofie) to beer. Should loosen the grip up a bit, if not totally knock it out. Insert handlebar.

Philatio 06-07-07 03:28 PM

I've always used rubbing alcohol.

I'm with you on that one..it works for most of my grips.

humancongereel 06-07-07 03:50 PM

a drop of dr bronner's and a drop of water, just on your fingertip. rub around the grip a bit, and work it on gently, slowly, some patience, some twisting, but it'll go on soon enough. if you use too much it'll slide when you ride for a while. annoying.

zacked 06-07-07 03:55 PM

blasting caps.

WD40 will degrade most rubbers more than alcohol or acetone.

p.s. this thread is the best birthday present I've gotten so far today.

freeskihp 06-07-07 05:23 PM

WD40 is the WDbest

Well, thanks for the tip (note to self: don't use WD-40 on rubbers); although I've used it to install and remove grips; it works perfectly with no degradation to the (rubber) grip. (OP: this has been discussed at least three times in the past year; you might try the "search" function).

PS: Happy burfday to Nims!

lattanzio 06-07-07 05:53 PM

i slide it on a broom or mop handle, something smaller than the handlebars and flip it inside out. thats worked for champs and strong g's but probably wouldnt with ourys and the like.

jyossarian 06-07-07 05:54 PM

If it won't go on w/ the hammer you're using, you need a bigger hammer. Or manly muscles.
