Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? There are many different qualities of U-locks a U-lock rated Sold Secure Gold or four star by the ART foundation will be very difficult to break in real world conditions. In fact I have never heard of a bike being stolen while using a high-end U-lock properly.

Just curious where you read this. I dug up this posting from last April:

Did they change their mind? I'm actually looking at replacing mine because the locking mechanism is starting to act up. Thinking of getting an Abus Steel-O-Flex 1000. Sold Secure gave it a Gold rating.

I use two of these when I go someplace shady.

I'm not sure on the weight on the NYC chain, but I can't
imagine it's lighter or easier to carry than two of these.
Plus, they only cost $25 each (one's my girlfriends, truth
be told).

I was thinking about picking one of those up at the LBS, what kind of locking cylinder does it have?

(Cylinder? Flat key?)

Listen if someone wants your bike, it doesnt matter wat lock is on that puppy. a lock only buys u more time, that and intimidation. If a punk wants your bike that badly, it doesnt matter wat lock you have on that, its gonna get jacked.

I ride in Suburbia and safer parts of Philly, the latter mostly in the daytime or in lit and populated areas (FU Church, Old City). A lock does it's job where I go, because someone isn't gonna get away with busting a lock with boltcutters in either place and nobody steals bikes in Media and Swarthmore.

Hell, my buddy left a bike he dumpstered unlocked outside school for the last four or so weeks and nobody even touched it. (of course both tires flat, no front brake, and a grocery bagged comfort seat aren't very desirable)

P.S. Karma's totally gonna get me back for this post.

The lock mechanism is screwed up, huh? I have had that happen to 3 OnGuard/Magnum U-locks of mine. Never again will I buy from them. (OnGuard and Magnum are the exact same locks. Magnum is a company from Israel which designs the locks and has them made in China. They are either branded OnGuard or Magnum depending on where they are sold.)

It's from the Cycling Plus lock test 2007. They tested a Magnum Plus 110mm Armored Cable. For some bizarre reason it received a Sold Secure Gold rating. Cycling Plus mentioned that Sold Secure must have been having an off day.....

The armored cable locks that were recommended are the Abus Steel-o-Flex Granit 1000, which passed the five minute manual tool attack test, and the Trelock Motorrad MS650, which also passed the five minute manual attack test.

I have no idea how to answer the question about the locking
cylinder. It does have a flat key, and as I understand it, it
consistently out-performs the Kryptonite Evolution (its closest
competitor) in tests, and costs like $25 less.

I use a NY chain *and* a krypto mini-u anytime I lock up on the street. Also use a length of old 1/8" chain wrapped in a tube to secure my saddle. So far so good. Then again, I never leave my bike out overnight.

Not completely,I have to jiggle the key to turn it to get it out. But I've had a couple friends have probs. I have noticed OnGuards tend to be more finicky than Kryptos.

I'm going to break down and drop the dosh on the Abus. It's really handy to have something more adaptable than a U lock if you don't know what you'll be locking to. And one of the folks I was riding with this weekend didn't have a lock,so she was able to lock up with me. Wish more places carried them,I'm buying it off a motorcycling site.
