Anybody lock up with this?
In Tokyo i never thought twice about locking up with a dinky lock or not locking at all. No worries.

I use the NY chain from time to time. Keep the sleeve on the chain if you don't like holes in your shirts. That is beefier than my chain, so you should be fine.

my budddy just brought me back a german or dutch lock (stahlex) from amsterdam, very similar to ^ but with a less fancypants lock (seems strong as ****, but just not a U). anyhow, i thought it would be a pain in the ass, until i took it out last night and didn't need a bag... i'm sold.

i use the same lock. its fine. if you lockin up for just a little bit of time 30 min etc. a regular long shackle u lock is good enough.

I use the NY lock when I'm in NYC. In smaller cities with less bike thieves (Hartford, Boston), I just use my old-style Krypto NYC U-Lock.

I use that for locking up on campus, but I just leave it on the rack so I don't have to carry it around. It's a good lock if you can leave it somewhere, but otherwise it can be a PITA. I used to wear it bandolier style over my non-bag shoulder, and that crap killed my back. I plan to get a kryptonite mini u-lock sometime soon for general purpose locking.

I use that (the 3'3" version) AND a Krypto U-lock!
You're right though, that NYC chain is a heavy b@stard. I've been carrying it around my waist (like a belt), but that can't be the safest method if I crash. |
yeah, don't lock them around your waist, use a clip or something that would make an EMT's job easier.

I have the Krypto NY lock. Feels fine when I wear it around my waist. Sucks to carry it on your back.

I crashed while wearing mine and I got a lock-shaped bruise on my rib cage. Could have been worse, especially since I wore it on my shoulder/neck. How do you guys wear a 3 foot chain around your waist? I must be too skinny.

i use that chain w/ an american lock in nyc. no probs yet, knock wood. as has been pointed out, it's all good until you land on it, then your hip, and/or lower back will have a little extra hurt.

That test looks like a bit of BS in the real world. For one the bolt cutter is like 5' long. It's a controlled environment, with a non slip mat on the ground. And it looks like the guy is going to induce a hernia every time he chops it. I don't think out average crackhead can break it in 29 seconds. Most crackheads are too skinny to get some good weight on the tool. That one guy is pretty thick. I don't think he's stealing bikes, more like seconds. I won't argue that it's indestructible. The video clearly shows that it is not, but you can bet that it's going to take someone, even with the same tool, a lot longer on the street. I'll stick with my Krypto chain I still haven't figured out a good way to keep my components from being stolen, or maybe it's time for a beater. |
