Is this a viable idea?

Before I bought my pista my beater bike was an old Raleigh 3-speed sport.

Now I'm hooked on fixed gear riding (because of the pista) and I've been wondering if anyone has converted one of these old 3-speeds to a fixie. Because of its weight I thought it might be too hard to stop, so I maybe I could convert it to singlespeed with a coasterbrake (it has a coaster right now). Thoughts? Comments? Thanks.

**** that. just leave it. find a REAL beater and convert that.

you don't need to make everything ever fixed.

Sure. why not . . .

now that it's converted it can climb trees? Sweet!

Sure. Replaced the cottered cranks with alloy cotterless cranks. Used a alloy micro adjust seatpost instead of the stock steel barbell. Changed the Northroads to Wald Touring bars. Formula out back and a Normandy in front laced 3x Araya 27's. Changed the block pedals to more normal pedals with double straps. Only thing I have against the frame is the Raleigh threaded fork and BB and that it is pretty flexy.

You could do this if you were one tough dude.

Didn't Shelden say those things make great conversions?

what do you weigh? If it weighs, say, above 25% percent of your weight then you may experience it being harder to stop. Thats why you should get a brake.......

Give it a go. Keep the fenders.

Yeah I'm a total lightweight so I'll probably have to put a brake on it (wish it wasn't starting off with a coaster). I also want to keep the fenders, but I want to keep it as light as possible.
