What fork for a 64cm Trek 510??
 

So I just won a new frame on ebay. It is a 64cm Trek 510 from 1979/80. It doesn't come with the fork so I am in need of some suggestions. I was thinking a steamroller. Any thoughts??

measure that frames steerer tube and make sure whatever fork you buy is long enough!

that thing will probably have to be seriously long. a new uncut fork will probably be long enough but you definitely wont have many options in used forks left that long.

That's what I'm afraid of. I was thinking of buying new anyway. What do you suggest as a good height to have sticking out of the top of the steerer? I don't think I'm gonna need to have a bunch of spacers to raise up the headset as the frame is good sized but I had an issue with moving a fork to a new MTB frame and it was ALMOST too short.

Are you going threadless or sticking with the original threaded style?

I see from the vintage-trek brochures that the head tube length is not included with the geometry, so you'll have to measure

Yeah, unfotunately that brochure doesn't mention the exact size. I was thinking of going threadless as I don't really know how I'd get a threaded fork to fit a steerer that size. I'll give it a measure tomorrow when I pick it up.

I got a chrome Tange steel threaded fork for one of my bikes also needing a long steerer for a very reasonable price from Airbomb. Mine was for 27" wheel size and I'm quite happy with the it.

Yeah, I had a replacement Tange steel threaded fork (700c) as a replacement for a 27in fork on my old Schwinn frame. It's a tall frame and I had plenty of length, even cut it down a little after using spacers. Think it was about 30 or 40 bucks.
I've only ever seen them in chrome if that makes a difference - but I might be wrong.

If you are going threadless however much you need to get the bars at the right height.

If threaded the stack height of your headset.

Figure out how high you need the saddle to be from a current bike remembering that fore/aft position, saddle and pedals will all effect it some. Then figure out how high you want the bars to be and therefore how long of a steerer tube you need. Either way this isn't a question people can answer for you.

I'm sure you're also aware it's uses a 1" steerer.
