Powder coating a (new) Sputnik
Guys I'm already thinking (very hard) of having my 17 days old Jamis Sputnik powder coated probably white. Do you think this it is worth it. I mean is this the kind of frame worth investing what it would cost me? Mind you it would probably cost a whole lot to first strip the (boring) black powder coated paint it comes with, but do you think it is worth it? Please let me know.

Id ride it for a while longer until you are sure you like it before you blow money on it. it may grow on you.

By all (dimly recollected) accounts, the Sputnik frame is toward the better side of the off-the-line bike frames. As such, while the expense may be entirely unnecessary, it will not be a complete waste.

Yeah it does ride very good, but then again it is my first bike ever and fixed gear which was already a bold move ( I think) on my part. So although I really don't have a point of reference I love it. I just want to me make my "own" and give it a color that says something...I think that black color is plain and boring. Like I said I'm thinking of a white color, simple but I like it...

The flat black was one of the reasons I love my Sputnik.
I think there are much better ways to spend your money than to repaint it so soon. At least get a couple chips in it before stripping it. Personally I would make a overall plan of what you want to do to the bike and make repainting it towards the end of the list. Also I dont know if you can strip the forks since they are carbon fiber (maybe you can, but research it carefully before hand). So youd have a white frame with black forks, which could be cool if thats what you are going for.
Personally I didnt care for the saddle nor handlebars that came on it, so those were the first things I tossed.
And if you do strip and coat the frame take pics along throughout the process.

I dont know how white is less boring than black(do a candy/pearl color if you want flashy),but I would spend 200 dollars on used wheels, etc. before a powder coat.

How about a Seventies style paint job. Lots of bikes of that era sported seat tubes of another color. Yellow to orange to red flames would look good on a black frame. Black makes a great base color for a paint job. Good luck

What do you mean schnee???
Anyways, this guy in the bronx told me he would do it for $50 (sandblasted and all) which sounded a tod fishy since other places do it for nothing less that $250. This other guy in the bronx also said he would do it for $100 but I would have to get it sandblasted somewhere else cause he doesn;t do that.

Since you work in a shop, what kind of cog does the sputnik use???
I'm thinking of getting a 18T for the flip.

painting carbon parts (the fork) won't work out,.. your dooming yourself to mechanical failure without knowing it,... unless you have you're bike painted by someone that's certified to paint carbon fiber (AKA IF ) the paint won't stick to the fork enough and you won't be able to see any cracks or damage that is done to the fork underneath the paint which is much more likely to happen if you're riding it in the city.

Did you take the logos off and just leave the silver bands with your paint or did you just photoshop them out? I wore off half the 'Sputnik' logo on the top tube this winter with my rain pants so I want to remove the rest of the silver paint without damaging the flat black. Any suggestions?
