Track bikes in this range?

Are there any track bikes in the range of $1000-$1500 that aren't built in Taiwan. I am debating what to get for my next bike.

666pack 06-25-07 10:27 AM

no. taiwan has the market cornered.

the world's only track bike factories are located there.
sorry about your luck.

COmplete? Frame and fork? Buying local custom? Google?

Hopetoditchcar 06-25-07 10:32 AM

I was looking for a complete bike, everything included ( I understand that some components may be made in taiwan, but I would like the majority of them frame, wheels, fork...not made there) Is this even possible anymore?

andypants 06-25-07 10:40 AM

The Lemond Fillmore is about $1000 complete. Don't know where the stuff comes from, but probably Japan, not Taiwan.

I recommend getting a frame from a local framebuilder and building it with parts you prefer.

andypants 06-25-07 10:41 AM

And good luck with ditching the car, it rules!

abeabe 06-25-07 10:49 AM

whats your beef with taiwan?

ersatz radio 06-25-07 10:50 AM

Why are you avoiding Taiwanese products?

furiousgeorge 06-25-07 11:06 AM

i bet taiwanese bikes killed his family in cold blood.

i agree. for that much, you should be able to get a fully (or at least mostly) customized deal, as long as your tastes ain't tooo fancy...

getting a pre-built is a a better deal and certainly easier, but what are you american or something? go out and find fun parts!

ollyisk 06-25-07 11:33 AM

yeah, for $1500 you could find a local person (you live in chicago so it's highly likely) to build you a frame (most builders prices i've seen range from $750-$1500ish depending on additional options like: type of steel, paint, lugs, etc), and if you didn't go super fancy on the frame, you'd probably have about $500-$600 left over and you could buy some nice componentry with that.

I'd try Marinoni, since I'm from Canada. It's custom and decently priced. But the damn customs... Try to contact them or bicycle specialities.

If you've got 1500 to throw down for a track bike then get Mercian
in the UK to build you a custom one. . .they do custom frames for 400 some
odd pounds--probably 600 bucks for the frame?

If you have a beef with Taiwan the Rivendell Quickbeam is made by Panasonic
in Japan as far as I know.

andypants 06-25-07 01:09 PM

Villin has a frameset for $750 out there too, just to rep the FL.

666pack 06-25-07 01:40 PM

and you can definitly build an awesome bike with that kind of money with whatever kinds of parts you want if you take some time and search around.

genericbikedude 06-25-07 02:37 PM

"This bicycle is a capitalist running dog"

Hopetoditchcar 06-25-07 03:01 PM

So I guess thath the consensus is in this price range there is nothing prebuilt available?

BuddyMike 06-25-07 03:07 PM

If your willing to spend that much, go custom. Bob Jackson frames are nice and nicely priced. Definatly go custom.

genericbikedude 06-25-07 03:08 PM

He wants wheels and stuff, too.

BuddyMike 06-25-07 03:13 PM

You can get a decent custom track bike for under a grand and that leaves a good amount for decent wheelset and drive train.
