from clipless to clips&straps
 

i recently switched my fixie over from clipless to clips and straps after the previous thread here, however, i can't seem to get the straps to fit right..

is there a proper method to ensure your straps are the right fit? it seems i have to reach down and pull the strap onto my sneaker a little bit to get it to grab my foot the right way. or else it just bunches up at the top of my sneaker..

any suggestions?

hm, that doesn't sound right... if you have decent teclips, the top part that the strap goes through should do a good job pulling the strap over your foot. otherwise, your straps might be too loose.

it's true that polyester straps don't hug your foot as well as leather ones... you might want to look into leather.

i have mks toe clips LL (i wear a size 12 shoe and they are usually skate shoes) and leather straps..

so you think i should tighten them?

i usually wear bulky shoes as well which is why i never got into clips... i have trouble getting my shoes into them, and when i do they are never as tight as i'd like (i've never been able to skid the tire on a fixie using clips)
carrying my regular shoes with me is never an issue, and i'f i'm only going a short distance i have a pair of nikes that i cut so the sole fits over my speedplays...

I like straps, simply because you still have movement on the platform of the pedal :)

pro's used to reach down and tighten those straps(back in the 70's)

But i think its just too risky, especially because you're communiting..

Perhaps you are just used to clipless pedals and thier efficiency..

YEAH. i think that's exactly what it is. and just like gally said, i never feel confident in skidding with clips on. i guess using clipless for a while really spoils you.

anyway -- as of this morning, the clipless pedals are back on and i commuted to work and couldn't be happier.

i'll keep the clips and straps just in case i have the urge to throw them back on, but for now i'm staying clipless..

next topic: eggbeaters or speedplays for your fixie?? what pedal has the least off-bike cleat annoyance factor?

i'm scared to death of clipless pedals. part of this may stem from the lycra clad guy who fell over the other day while he and i were talking/trackstanding at a red light. i keep my straps fairly loose in traffic, wear bulky shoes, and still manage to get the back tire to skid when i need to. but then, i try to avoid skidding most of the time.

i have a pair of shimano pedals with clips i keep around for when i'm working on someone's bike that has clipless, but for personal bikes i'll pass...

and i ride speedplays mainly cuz they offer me enough swivel room to stay comfortable and they have a super low profile (i scrape regular pedals while turning all the time on fixies, never done it with the speedplays) but having the shoes does get real anoying at times... i've come damn close to falling on my ass trying to run down the stairs to the subway while wearing the shoes...
i have a pair of nikes that i cut a hole and a slot out of the sole and bolted a thin sheet of aluminum into the sole from the inside... so i guess the fact that you can have recessed cleats is the only reason i'd go for egg beaters...
