Throat problems on long rides

My throat feels like it's on fire, is it just me?

So I just did my first fixed century last saturday and have done a couple of 60 to 80 mile rides prior to that. After I was done, I ordered a gigantic pizza. But when I started in on it, my mouth felt like it had a million tiny cuts all over the back and the roof of my mouth and it was burning really badly. This happens almost everytime I go for a 70 plus ride, like my mouth gets scorched by the wind. Result, I can't eat for a day and it hurts to eat for 3 after that until my mouth heals. I drink plenty of water on rides, though I probably get a little more relaxed about it toward the end. I am also aware that I ride with my mouth open sometimes and that this is probably causing it. But shouldn't you be able to have your mouth open some without it feeling like it's been coated in napalm?

Does any one else have that problem/is it common? Is there anything I can do during the ride to stop it or after to not get it to hurt like ****?

I want to keep doing long rides, but this **** hurts enough to make me think twice about doing one again soon.

addendum: "close your mouth" is not an acceptable response, unless it really is the ONLY thing i can do. Otherwise, I'll have to get shants to call you a cockbag.

Well I have experienced a similar sort of thing, but it wasn't cycling, I was hiking 8,000 ft above what I am used to, and yah, it was, for me, as a result of breathing heavy, through my mouth. The best wa to solve it was to be concious of what I was doing and do my best to breath through my nose, and for me as a sort of training to do this, it helped to hold a bit of water in my mouth, forcing myself to keep my mouth closed. So, yes I am reccomending you close your mouth,

Secondly, do you live in a dusty area? It occured to me that may compound your problem, or be the source of it.

suck on lozenges while you ride, or something to keep the saliva flowing. i have an abundance of throat problems and that usually helps.

No it doesn't hurt when i'm breathing but whenever I eat any food it hurts really bad. It's been getting progressively better over the past couple days but is still not healed completely.

I used to (kind of still have) a problem with my throat after long, especially warm, rides. It would get so dry, that when I stopped riding, it hurt to breathe. Water. Water. Water. A camelbak works wonders for it, since it's so easy to sip.

Seriously, though. Do you smoke? I can't imagine that helping your throat during or after exercise.

I get that, but it's usually because I smoke before/during rides. Quit smoking. Sip water.

I probably need to drink more water and concenatrate on my closing my mouth more. I was a smoker for 8 years but haven't for 2+ years. My mouth felt pretty good when i really concentrated on keeping it hydrated (for the first 75 miles) but after that I just wanted to finish and forgot to keep drinking water.

I love to chew gum while messing, but you gotta be careful not to chew too hard and make your jaw muscles hurt.
