I bought gloves today
My hands hurt and I ride alot and they just seemed to be getting progressively worse. Does anyone else wear gloves? What kind? I wanted them bad-ass clemente gloves, but couldn't wait. I got some Louis Garneua biogels ($20 on sale). They definately make a difference on the heels of my hands. I hope that wearing them for awhile will ease the constant pain and eventually I won't need to wear them all the time, just long rides.

Also, make sure you aren't putting too much weight on your hands when you ride by messing with saddle tilt and such.
I've been meaning to get gloves for a while, especially for mtb, but I still haven't. |
Watch out for glove-tan.

what bars?
how far is a long ride for you? post a picture of you on your bike. |
massive saddle-bar drop + down-tilted, too-far-forward saddle?

Edit: I also have the bonus watch tanline, so when I take them both off it looks like I have a leather wristband on. |

I had the cannodale ladies gloves (i forget which model) which were comfy but completely dissintegrated in about 6 months..for real, by the end they were just holes held together by a few stitches..
I now have the Louis Garneau Ergoair which are way more comfy, have better pads and arent some fake suede leather like the cannondales (which is why they turned into holes), the stretchy lycra/spandex holding them together will be nearly impossible to put holes in just cuz it will stretch before it tears.. but I love gloves..I used to just were those normal cotton knit gloves that I cut the finger tips off of and those are great for keeping your hands warm but thats about it...cycling gloves are sweet cuz they do that as well as have padding and the super cool cut off fingers...hurray for gloves! and just wear sunscreen for no tan..or long sleeves ;) |
My thing is that I can't wear gloves that are too padded because it makes parts of my hands go numb, so my faves are these super ultra cheap leather-palm gloves I got at this small town bike shop where my girlfriend's family lives. Tan leather palm, white crochet back, all pimp.
Crochet back also helps alleviate glove tan, although you still get it across the strap and all, so it just looks weird. |
yeah gloves wont help if you're leaning on your hands too much. it'll just help you ignore them for a little bit.

If the numbness is more toward the index middle then median n. compression is the problem. If the small/ring fingers are involved then it is ulnar neuropathy, less common than median. Typical road bars or drop bars give you a lot of options for hand positioning to relieve this, on top of the bar inside of the brakes, on the brake hoods and on the drops. By rotating your position you can reduce the problem. A flat handlebar, like ATB or comfort bikes does not give you many options. Barends might help. I assume you are wearing cycling gloves and have the bar wrapped? There are thicker foam bar tapes which can spreadout the pressure. The bar can be raised so it is at least as high as the seat or higher to reduce hand pressure. Numbness up the arms suggests a nerve compression up higher, usually in the neck or within the first 8 inches of travel of the nerve away from the neck. That would require MD involvement to evaluate.
Steve also sometimes having too much padding is worst than less for that area in your palm. |
Always wear your gloaves.

You should still have gloaves though, for safety's sake. |
My ass usually starts to hurt before my hands, maybe you have too much weight on your hands?
I just put some gel pad things from Nashbar on my road bike, they go under the bar tape. Should get a long ride in this weekend to see how they feel after 40 miles. |

Your leg extension looks fine, the saddle may be a little nose down. You might be sliding forward and putting extra pressure on your hands. I would not change a bunch of things at one time, just make little adjustments until you weed out the problem.
|
Wait a minute, I just realized you only have one brake lever. Don't you wanna have two? That's where your hand goes...
|
Louis Garneau ergo air m-vent whatever they are called. I got a pair thrown at me by my sponsor before my last race. God they are great. otherwise correct bar-saddle distance should give you a more comfortable ride anyway. saddle-bar drop looks fine, nothing too drastic, but try setting your saddle level, otherwise you will be constantly pushing against the bars, causing numbness. Check fore-aft as well. If it is too far back or forward, you will use your hands/arms to stabilise to your normal position, putting un-needed stress on them.

long-fingered every time! for longer rides try taking your hands off and shaking/stretching them a bit every so often. is this a recent problem? how bad/what type of pain? |

you dont want to show us what dutret wants to see |
