Can some explain ................

from whence the word "fixie" came? Not to be all snooty or anything, but I really dislike that term. "Fixie" conjures up cute images of pink fuzzy bunnies, fairies floating over dells, or cotton candy or some such. I am just interested to know the etomology of the word.

What's wrong with pink fuzzy bunnies, fairies floating over dells, and cotton candy?

fetch 07-09-07 06:27 PM

im super hungry atm. someone recommended me something to make. gonna stop by the mart omw home.

Sizzle-Chest 07-09-07 06:50 PM

your confusing the word "fixie" with "pixie", and i'm no rocket surgeon but it might have to do with the cog being fixed or affixed to the hub, rather than spinning freely?

bonechilling 07-09-07 06:53 PM

I'm just going to guess the term "fixie" is a shortening
of "fixed gear."

doofo 07-09-07 07:02 PM

Where do I buy wing attachments for my cranks?

mattface 07-09-07 09:16 PM

Bikes are cute. get over it.

br995 07-09-07 10:10 PM

"Fixie" is short for "fixed gear" because it has less syllables.

Wait, no, that's not it.

Because it sounds better.

Hmmm. No. Not that either.

Because it's cool?

Shoot. Wrong again.

Anyway, "can some explain" what a dell is?

dell /dɛl/
–noun
a small, usually wooded valley; vale.

Dumpsterlife 07-09-07 10:22 PM

does anyone ride their bike anymore?

jotog 07-09-07 10:28 PM

a fixie by any other name would dell as sweet.

diff_lock2 07-10-07 02:34 AM

Less letters than fixed gear, and theres no space. Its like trany for transmission(sp) (and other things lol)

Wait, did anyone ride their bikes to begin with? I've been using mine to dry sweaters on.

It lacks a pausing consonant in the middle. Fixed gear has D so it inherently takes longer to say.

captsven 07-10-07 05:15 AM

It was conjured in the bowels of freewheel hell.

joeprim 07-10-07 05:20 AM

I understand that a fixie is a single speed bicycle without a freewheel. e.g. it cant coast so the pedals are fixed to the wheels. BTE I like your pixie description. Oh and we have a group ride after work today.

Joe

Ceya 07-10-07 07:04 AM

It came from the term fixed gear, as in your track wheelset.

It mainly applied to those who used the wheelsets to their road bikes during winter training or speed work on the road..

This how i think it's term .

CEYA!

Do you not think it's rather that we're confusing "pixie" with "troll"? Seriously, nobody needs to ask this question.

Down here in the South, when we are getting ready to do something, we say "I'm fixing to ride my bike" or "I'm fixing to go look up under that table for my wallet." "I'm fixing some grits; anyone hungry." The pictures need developing but I'm out of fixer.

Some might say "fixie" refers to the dealer on the corner that from which the junkies score their junk. Or are the junkies themselves called fixies?

xylophonecks 07-10-07 08:22 AM

i'm fixin' to go ride my bike, ya'll should come.

That this is what you feel everyone needs to be discussing is sad. That so many took the time to try is about as bad.
