back when i lived in austin i would run into at least 2 people a week that would ask questions about my bike. when it was parked outside my work, i would look out the front windows and see people constantly stoping to take a close look at what was going on with it.
It was even better when i was unlocking and some cute sorority girls would pass by and i would hear one of them explaining to their sorority sisters how a fixed gear bike works. in the six years that i would lock up in austin at that same location the sorority girl thing happened at least 4 times.

One time I was unlocking out front of the library. Some dude walks over and says "Hey bro nice fixie dude yeah." I said "Thanks." Then he said "Wanna go shred?" and i'm all "**** YEAH!" Turns out that dude was Yngvie Malmsteen.

One time, i locked my fixed up and the mayor came over to me and was all "that bike is craaaaazy! i can't believe you ride something with only one gear and no freewheel and NO BRAKES!! how do you stop? and your geometry's so tight, what do you do about toe overlap??" and i was all, "it's no big deal", and he shook his head and was all "you're nuts, all you guys are nuts".
But then a little while later, these sexy 18 year old dance majors from u arts saw me riding and started giggling and were like "that's a sexy track bike" and i was all "thanks".

I've encountered a few people who couldn't believe I only had one speed on that "racing bike". and a few who coudln't believe my ss mtb wasn't a "fixie". and even a few people who insisted I have "no gears" when I quite obviously have two in plain sight.

I work at a coffee shop for my morning job, and there is one older dude who always talks to me about fixies, wants to convert his old raleigh, is really interested in track bikes, etc, and is generally awsome.
There's also a guy that comes in every morning to switch "custody" of his daughter with his ex wife. One day he came and in said "Hey, do you ride a fixie?" and i said "yeah, that's my bike out back" and he said his daughter had pointed it out. Aparently he rides a bianchi fix of some sort, and his 8 year old daughter has been asking him to make her a fixie.
Most people at work just act weird when it comes up that i ride my bike to work every day. crazy.

I work at a bike store. Everyone in my town knows everything about bikes, and half of them ride fixed gears.
Alleycat on the 7th, I was sprinting up a hill about 4 miles from the start and some random guy walking by yelled "Alleycat?". "Hell yeah!" I responded. Must have been a coincidence.. only 20 people showed up to this alleycat, and it wasn't publicized at all.

Is anyone else getting the sense that there are two completely different tribes running down this gorge and one is entirely oblivious of the other?

I was leaving the coffee stop on my way to work this morning, on my way out a couple of ladies (In full motorcycle gear, the leather and all) asked "Oh, is that a single speed?" I replied "yeah", then rode off to work. But, it was really fixed...shhh.
