Looks like people are coasting..

Hi,

Goofy question - I was watching some alley cat races on youtube and I saw a few guys grabbing onto cars and letting the car pull them, however they weren't pedaling while this was happening. Is this because they were not riding a fixed gear or were they skidding? Just curious is all.

Same thing when people do that smooth rolling dismount...they just locking the rear wheel at the same time?

Thanks,

-Mike

They have freewheels.

nattyfab can coast on a fixie.

Moshiiii 07-11-07 09:47 AM

obviously, you have to do a nose wheelie while you are skitching on a fixed gear bicycle.

Moshiiii 07-11-07 09:51 AM

all nevermind i see it

FraAngelico 07-11-07 10:02 AM

zOMFG you means I don't need an uber-break-less-fixie to race in alleycats?

roadfix 07-11-07 10:10 AM

I just bought an ENO freecog. Coasting became fun....again...:D

Skitching is at 3:10 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNgJrfgXijg

and the smooth dismount is at 1:25 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS9G_...elated&search=

I realize that these people may be using singlespeeds, but I was wondering if that is indeed what they are using or is it possible on a fixed?

Thanks,

-Mike

joshuastar 07-11-07 10:26 AM

it is.

queerpunk 07-11-07 10:32 AM

skitching is possible on a fixed.
skidding while skitching, on the other hand... i don't even know how such a thought would occur to somebody. what are they doing? trying to slow the car down? or GASP, alleycat racers not riding fixed?

alleycats aren't about riding fixed. plenty of people do, sure, but by no means all (monstertrack excluded, of course).

You can do that on a fixed-gear bike too.

The guy dismounting is on a fixed-gear however he is not skidding at all during that dismount. You can clearly see that the pedal lifts his entire body up as he swings his leg over the saddle.

Bohh 07-11-07 10:42 AM

Ok, thanks a lot guys. I'm just building up my first fixed gear so I was just watching all these videos trying to get an idea of what is possible on one. I appreciate the help.

nattyfab doesn't skitch on cars; cars skitch on nattyfab.

the frequency and endurance of nattyfab jokes is somewhat of an incredible phenomenon - especially for me because i knew him long before i joined bikeforums. maybe they're only still funny to me because i actually know him and i assume none of the people making the jokes have ever talked to him. he's actually a really friendly guy who's a lot of fun and not at all full of himself or under the illusion that he's a super-bad-** bike messenger. he's also a pretty knowledgeable mechanic and volunteers at a community bike shop.

(i fully expect everyone to make fun of me/not take me seriously on these forums after this post)

um... PM sent...

obviously you don't get it-- which is definately my fault. seriously.

I take you fully serious and probably would like the guy if I met him myself.

Never the less, he took a silly photo, and will die being known for it.
