From the second picture, it looks like there is some kind of hole drilled into the inner side of the chainstay. That would definitely be a place for a stress concentration. Combine that w/ the heat from the weld (not all welds are perfect, some can be too hot) and a break is not out of the question.

In other words: manufacturers defect!

Not to hijack the thread, but I noticed some noise when I was pedaling home last night with every rotation of the pedal. Figured maybe something was up with the dumb french BB. I noticed increasing slack when standing, figured the rear wheel must have loosened a bolt on the axle. Road it home slowly. Hopped off and saw I was missing one chain ring bolt and the other four were half way undone. =X

I was safe by about 2.5 inches RE: limit line
(six inches in the tube, nine inches from the top of the tube to the top of the seat.)

Maybe larger frame = less seatpost sticking out = less leverage to crack frame?
I got the largest frame available; next bike will not be dam sloping TT.

same thing happened to me years ago, but it was 2 gone and 3 loose. my LBS said they had never seen that before.

Please keep us updated, I'd love to hear the LBS and Specialized's reaction to this.....

Whatever else, you are clearly a straight-out monster. I've broken a pedal axle, and a rear axle in the last 18 months, but no frames.....yet. You win.

i broke 2 frames this past year. A trek mtb that broke in the same spot as your langster. other one was a ****ty cruiser/hybrid that i buckled the downtube, top tube, and bent the seatpost when i bunny hopped a pot hole.

There also may be uneven stress in the tube because it is so close to transition to the solid dropout.

Then there's the whole subject of weld heat effect there. Cannondale talked about how important it was (back around the 1980's) to get the full-frame post-build heat treating just so. If I'm not mistaken, steel cromo 4130 frames and components were strongest with a particular post build heat treating...I think some of the custom/small builders were (are?) sending thin-wall products to heat treaters before painting.

Nope. We do it every day and I've yet to hear of a snapped chainstay or seat tube. I vote for faulty frame.

EDIT: I see you're talking about bolts coming loose. It happens all the time. I use locktite on most of the bolts on my bikes.

But seriously, I got rid of the thing cause I always felt like I was gonna break it. I'm 6'0" and 180lbs and was afraid like hell to drop curbs or do anything fun or agressive. Now, reading this thread, I feel entirly justified.
