snapped another IRO/Formula hub locknut
 

that makes 3 times. also makes twice i've been stranded on my fixed and had to rely on the celly, as opposed to zero times on my geared bikes. thats irrelevant anyway, but i want to buy a handful of Formula locknuts and keep one or two in my repair kit. I can call Iro Tony and order some, but where else can i get some online? I also need a few fresh axlenuts. Business cycles maybe?

Why would you want MORE iro/formula nuts if you have already broken 3 of them???

I know this doesn't answer your question, but is it the nut on the outside (with the swiveling part) that breaks, or is it the locking nut on the inside? I have yet to break one, but reading the posts about this has me worried.

just get a better quality lock ring for cripes sake like a dura ace one or a soma just make sure it matches the threading on your hub

It's not the lockring, it's the axel locknut.

I've broken 3 of mine as well, and I've basically concluded that the formula/iro locknuts are ****, but you also have to be sure that the cones are properly tightened, because I know when I broke one of mine it was loose, which did it in.

Just get some from the LBS.

then your over tightening them if you are afraid of dropout slippage just get a chain tug bmx ones work just as good as the "track specific" ones

it's not the axle/track nut on the outside, but the locknut/washer that rests against the inside of the dropout/fork end. it seems they're stamped, which may be intentional to avoid bearing damage from overtightening, but i think i just forgot to snug it down last time i took off/put on the wheel. anyway, the other side has one i got from the lbs, but it's a slightly different thickness and diameter and has no wrench flats like the stock piece. (although maybe i just have to find something similiar seeing as that one hasn't snapped)

I broke one the other day; I was doing some work to the bike (regreased BB, cleaned the chain, gears, etc) and noticed it was loose early on, forgot then tighten the wheel and went for a ride... snap...

Just make sure that they're tightened up to the spacers properly. If they're loose when you tighten the track nuts they will snap.

I don't believe this. I posted an hour ago, and when I went to check my chain tension since it felt loose earlier, the locknut one one side of my hub was broken. I think that side may have been slightly loose when I tightened it down; I can't remember.

+1, because of overtorquing due to fear of slippage, I broke two locknuts and two axle nuts in my first 3 weeks of fixed riding, got a tuggnut (and modified it for horizontal dropouts) and never had a problem after that.

This has been talked about a few times on the forum, and I think that the general consensus was that the Formula locknuts are prone to breaking.

It's also possible that since Formula is the hub of choice for the green fixed gear rider, they're more prone to being over-tightened, and hence, to breaking.

I've had my IRO hub for 3 years and never broken one. Weird.

I broke one.. I dont know how though, Its on my beater fixed gear bike, I drop it all the time in bike polo, and doing skids

I broke both sides of my IRO rear, with no adjustments, after three years of use. I replaced them with super generic steel nuts with the same threading (got them from a bike co-op in Montreal) and have never had a problem since. I wouldn't bother with replacements from IRO, just find something local. Shouldn't be too hard in most cities.

Was the bike coop RTM? :)

Anyhow, when I got my formula front at a newly opened coop LBS (Belleville), Tony told me about this issue and said he bought in some replacement nuts, I guess you can't go wrong with some heavy duty steel nuts :D

I agree with the others. Time to try something else.

My formulas are a year old and I have tightened them like manimal with no problems

Yes, it was indeed RTM. They let me root around for a while in the random nuts and bolts until I found the right thing. I think I left some parts in trade. Love the RTM.

Just broke my first one...where do you get replacements? They're metric 10 x 1 pitch, that's all I know.

I broke one a little while ago and had it replaced with a generic one off a trashed wheelset. I think the problem arises from the cone and locknut coming seperated. Even though I tighten them down they always come loose.

I'd like to get some spares as well! Should we email Formula?

I've broken the locknut and axle nut a couple times each. When you replace them, buy some other brand. I bought some axle nuts from harris that were better and used locknuts out of a bin at the LBS. I thought the formula axle nuts were cheap-o anyway.
