Boston
Hey guys
SO...looks like I'm moving to boston from CO, and I was wondering if you locals could tell me such things as where it is unsafe to lock my bike, where are fun places to go/things to do, bike shops, etc. Any general info, really. I'll probably be there in about 5 weeks.

but yeah, plenty of good stuff going on in Boston. as long as you don't mind the winters (and since you're coming from CO I'll make the bold assumption that you don't) its a fun place to be.
hope to see you around soon!

Get out of the city once in a while if you can. Boston is not the most bike friendly city out there, at least not around down town. Cambridge and points further North are pretty nice I believe (just guessing from what people tell me).

Realy depends on the part of town. Places like Harvard Square, Boston Common, anywhere near a school is a decent ride but riding downtown can be a huge pain in the ass. For example, around South Station there's been construction that really narrows the road and I've had to find alternate routes. I dunno, it could be cleared up by now. The winters do suck something fierce but the coldest and snowiest days just mean you've got to spring for the train, which will take you pretty much ANYWHERE you need to go. You definitely need to check out SCUL (www.scul.org) when you get to boston, it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on (but you get extra points if you don't have them on).

The winters lately have been ***** as hell. If fierce means rainy and 34 degrees every day, then yea the winters are fierce.
Check out Shawarma King on Beacon St when you get here.
Oh and as far as biking goes, downtown isnt that bad if you keep your head up. The biggest qualms I have with riding downtown is A) the smell of chinatown 2) the condition of the roads in areas are atrocious. III) pedestrians think they are god, ive been in ten fold more accident situations with people than cars.

That's true, this past winter was pretty tame. There were some donkey-balls-cold days though, right after a crazy warmspell. I think I was wearing a t-shirt in january at one point.

The last BAD winter around here was 2002-03 That was friggin cold. I was going to school in vermont at the time and I came home and the temperature literally didn't get above 15 degrees for like 3 weeks straight. Then I went back up to vermont and it was 30 degrees/coudy/flurries and it was the warmest day I had in weeks, then back down to ****ty temperatures. The following winter was cold, but not as bad. The first real snowfall happened on valentines day this year to give you an idea of how mild it was.

Yeah, it lulled us into a false sense of security.
Born and raised in New England and I HATE the freaking weather here.

Oh yeah, and don't expect the construction to ever go away. It's already been there for almost 20 years.

Go boston.

Yea riot police and tear gas is cool.
Construction consists of:
1) Dig hole
2) Look inside hole
3) Stand around hole and smoke a cigarette
4) Put gigantic steel plates over said hole and come back to it in a few days
5) Repeat from step 2

A few days? I think you meant months. You forgot cop drinking donuts talking to construction workers. Also, why were pieces of cement suspended in a tunnel for a ceiling when something nore lightweight could have been used..... It would have been more cost efficient and it wouldn't have killed someone.
