nyc fixed frustration

Sat. Night i am rolling into the LES and decide to take the Williamsburg Bridge as opposed to my usual bridge of choice, the Manhattan. I counted five sperate people walking thier fixed gear bikes UP the bridge this was around midnight and and upon coming back to brooklyn i counted four different people walking thier bikes up the bridge( 5 am)...all the people walking them up the bridge rode them down...but WTF...ill givem the fact that the williamsburg bridge is probally the tougher between the three lower bridges..but still>>i was very frustrated by this..****in ante up...does anyone else get frustrated at other riders in similar situations or am i just a mean dude?

andypants 07-23-07 11:03 AM

Maybe they were drunk, though I usually feel like I could do anything when I'm drunk.

Sounds pretty weak, maybe they should stop worrying about showing off with big gears and rock something more practical.

delicious 07-23-07 11:08 AM

Were they in your way or something?

Besides that, you should probably just keep in mind that some people are weak, out of shape, geared too high, or just don't want to get too sweaty. Also, when you're riding in a group and one person (like a small girl) can't make it up the bridge, everyone is going to be walking.

1fluffhead 07-23-07 11:09 AM

Why don't you worry about **** that actually matters instead of whether or not someone is walking their bike?

bonechilling 07-23-07 11:12 AM

One thing about the recent trend towards fixed gear bikes is that many, many non-athletic, out-of-shape people are going around, trying to push huge gears. Surprise, they're still out of shape!

bklyn74 07-23-07 11:13 AM

that's not very "rasta" of you, mon. fire up a dube and let jah take care of it.

They solved this problem about a hundred years ago with an invention called the "derailer." It allows the rider to vary their gear depending on their conditioning and the grade of the surface being ridden upon. You should look into one, sounds like you need it.

lacosta_rasta 07-23-07 11:23 AM

i guess its the fact that these cats spend all this money for top of the line machine and put spoke cards in thier wheels but wont even ride up a bridge? its like its an fashion accessory and no longer a bike.

i know people that have road bikes and they get off their bikes and walk it. maybe if i was from some sleeping little town where i just ride for fun to go to the local malt shop and not for survival i could make it up that bride after riding 60 miles plus with **** in my bag, sweat in my eye and so forth.

Sounds like you had your first hipster sighting:)

Landgolier 07-23-07 11:31 AM

The real question is how many people bombing the downhill had no brakes...

Wow, I didn't realize it was so tough living on your parent's money, going to an expensive school and pretending to be a messenger.

ohh trust me, that was not a burn. i knew some ****** would bring that up. its this stupid fixed gear elitists attuide over and over again. just let people ride or walk their shhhhit. i really doubt that the people walking their bikes are doing it to be fashionable. how do u know what or how expensive their bikes were. i know cats in the city that have some ill looking bikes. i mean they spend time and tons of money customizing it. their bikes are hot and everyone tells them that. why don't u find them and tell them that u think their bikes are accessories.

haha, wow, its like u use the same lines on everyone. my parents are immigrants living in the hood. they are living off the government actually. i actually go to city college in harlem. b/c i am poor and a person of color the government helps me out, but i work about 30 hours so i can come up with the rest of the money so i can graduate and get out of the hood. and i've messengered. i don't pretend.
god ur so lame. i mean really. ur come backs are weak. seriously. u can keep trying but u'll never get it right.

Yoshi 07-23-07 11:38 AM

Ya'll better watch out, or Dylan will give you a Colombian necktie. I've seen her do it before.

Say what you want about her riding skillz, I wouldn't want to be in a dark alley alone with her.

yeah, cause derailleurs address the need to get out of a saddle and move your legs in a non-pedaling motion.

ohh niki, ur so wonderful to me. these cats are so lame. the one loser pretending to be mad b/c riders aren't riding their bike and the other loser making generalizations that everyone makes and just being completely wrong.

i dont think you understand what i am saying..trust me i customize my bike and put money into it but i also ride it...up and down hills and on the flat cuz thats what its for...i am def not knockin people that customize thier bikes but people that parade them up and down bedford ave and the lower east side...

10x 07-23-07 11:44 AM

they have their own reasons for walking across the bridge, bicycle by their side, just as you have yr. reasons for riding over.
the weather in nyc last weekend was beautiful and i know i got off the bike once or twice sat. night to enjoy it a little longer.

however, if you continue to have frustrations with people riding, or not riding fixed in nyc, i suggest you go somewhere else.

there's this myth of the hipster with the blinged out bike, who doesn't really ride. it needs to end. yeah, i see people who aren't serious about riding bikes, and some of them have fixed gears (i see plenty of people not riding bikes in new york city) - and some are really ugly bikes - but i have yet to encounter anybody who goes out, spends a ton on a track bike, and then doesn't do anything with it or any other bikes other than "parade" it up and down bedford ave and the LES. blah, blah, blah. clumping, generalizations, stereotypes, and idiocy. let it end, k? it's not that important.

sp00ki 07-23-07 11:48 AM

lol, nyc is soft.

rasta. maybe ur right. i don't understand what the hell ur trying to say. maybe u and i should meet at the willy b and walk over it with our bikes and we can try to understand each other better b/c right now, i just am not feeling u.
this week was wonderful, and now that 10x posted, i remember getting off my bike and walking it to enjoy the nice view and weather. it happens. we should focus our energy on the fact that there has been an increase of bike usage in the city and how great it is that the city, although slowly, is starting to understand that.

Wait a year.

lazzarello 07-23-07 11:50 AM

The real question is why do people walk their bikes up and down stairs? Seriously, use the right tool for the job and get a BMX so you never have to walk again.

i dig it...the fact that more cats are riding is the positive...

ummm no it wasn't. thanks for trying. really. it would have been if it made sense. but it didn't. what if i want to start riding a track bike, and only a track bike but was tried. why the hell do i have to get a road bike to go up the bridge this one time or this week or this month until i'm strong enough to climb it. it's like a 13 year old come back. i'm a grown woman, so the "burn" was just corny and lame

le car 07-23-07 11:53 AM

ya'll losers.
REAL hardcore riders ride up the bridge with no hands, rolling a cig, and go down with both feet off the pedals, smoking the cig.
