Got mirrored today... by an idiot.

I was riding to work and some arse blazes past me very close... in a white suburban, but doesn't hit me. So I throw my arms up in the "WHATS UP BUDDY" pose.. Later, closer to my shop I kid you not, another white suburban pulls right up to the rear left side of me, out of the corner of my eye I see a headlight and bumper right on my rear wheel. Then he decides to blast past me very close I might add, close enough that his giant side mirror hits my elbow... then he takes off. I didn't get his license plate due to my attempt to regain control of my bike.

jerks on the road are dangerous, and whats up with white suburbans?

that is all...

Boss Moniker 07-23-07 03:58 PM

I definitely stay away from suburbans, as well as escalades, hummers, and all the larger SUVs. The drivers are generally awful at driving, and often they're simply mindless and clueless about everything in their lives.

I also got buzzed today, by a construction truck.

You seem sure they weren't the same person...

SugarPILL 07-23-07 04:02 PM

nah, skinny thug was the first, overweight balding was the second...

bonechilling 07-23-07 04:07 PM

Are you sure it wasn't this?

Calls for one of these, I reckon.

Seeing a big SUV coming up older my shoulder makes my life flash in front of my eyes.

On Saturday morning on a two-lane an old man actually had the decency to wait until there was no one in the other lane so he could actually give me enough room. It added about 10 seconds to his drive, but I got pelted with water bottles (full- heavier than I thought) from a car behind me full of mildly ******** sixteen-year-olds (and don't accuse me of hating the youth, I'm not too much older) who didn't appreciate the gesture. Also had a similar four-inch passing experience with a Lexus.

wiredthisway 07-23-07 06:26 PM

I had a big delivery truck pull out of a driveway right into me. There was no way he didn't see me, which just ticks me off.

helloamerican 07-23-07 07:41 PM

this happened to me except the ***** was going so fast her mirror broke on my body. she sped off too

people suck. i really get the feeling they look in their rear view mirror and think 'oh ****- no, he's still on the bike, i didnt kill him, ok, bolt'

Better just to carry a javelin. And I don't mean the wood kind either.

blickblocks 07-23-07 08:54 PM

I've been riding on 138 to work every day, a 45mph two lane road with unpredictable shoulders and lots of potholes. Amazingly, today some kind of large delivery truck (not quite a semi) waited until there was a gap in traffic going the opposite direction so they could pass with room to spare.

Seriously though, it kind of freaks me out when something (however rare) like this happens, because 1) I was on the shoulder, there was enough room as is, and 2) what if they happen to hit someone going the other direction?

It's nice knowing there are people out there who are aware.

Boss Moniker 07-23-07 09:09 PM

True. For every brain damaged motorist or group of angsty teens (welcome to the club), I encounter over 100 decently safe motorists.

Not particularly related, but soon after I got buzzed I was descending a hill at 25-30mph (EDIT: in the bike lane, actually) and this car just ahead of me pulls to the shoulder as if she was going to turn. But instead she stops with her window rolled down and says (not yells) something to me.. but because I wasn't expecting it and because I was traveling at a high speed, all I heard was "-----ey----". I kinda feel bad that I didn't stop, but I wanted to conserve momentum and I had somewhere to be.

It was most likely a complaint, your better off.

These are my favorite, the other day a lady told me I should ride on bike paths and stay off the road. What a reasonable and logical suggestion! There are bike paths leading everywhere I would ever need to go!

Seriously, what a *****. I guess the 10 seconds she (should have) waited for me were that important .

elemental 07-24-07 09:19 AM

Oh yeah, that was about 25 minutes after the water bottle incident. That was a fun ride.

Miiike 07-24-07 09:22 AM

i've actually been mirrored while in the middle of a 14 mile run, about 5 miles away from my house. i swear i thought my elbow was broken and the driver didn't even stop.

Haha, I find it funny how drivers assume all bikers are out just for the exercise and scenery.. you should counter that with "Well, shouldn't you do your racing on a nascar track?". That'll confuse them.

asherlighn 07-24-07 01:01 PM

After some testing (completely legal, dont jump on me) I have found that most SUVs, especially Mercury Mountaineers, have terribly made mirrors that will break off with little force. Dont ever get hit by a Subaru though, I was able to put nearly all my weight on those damned things.

egan 07-24-07 01:50 PM

I had a ny cab come so close to me that my pedal struck the underside of his car on up the upstroke of my pedal. It made me skip around like what happens from a bad pedal strike... It was one of the scarier moments I've had on my bike.

scott77 07-24-07 03:07 PM

The other day this dude threatened to beat my ass because I needed to get in the bike lane.

There was no bike lane.

bonechilling 07-24-07 03:17 PM

I'm generally treated with respect, but recently I was sitting at the front of traffic waiting to go straight ahead. I was the first one to the light, so it's not like I even skipped ahead of the cars to get there. Anyway, there was a right-turn only lane to my right, and another straight ahead lane to my left, and I was in what was, at that point, the center lane, but basically the furtherest right that a cyclist should be.

I was just taking it easy when this lady behind me starts yelling at me to move over to the other lane, an action which is both illegal and unsafe, since it's a turn lane. I just yelled back to her that I was where I was supposed to be, and she was like "Well, you could move over further!" Well yes, I guess I physically could, but I told her that then I would be breaking the law and endangering my safety, and anyway, how much time was I really going to cost her, five-ten seconds to pass me once the light turned green? To that, she said.. get this.. "**** you!"

I just shrugged it off and started riding, while she zipped around me, speeding to the next light, where I promptly passed her. I tapped on her window as I went by her.

bryanp 07-24-07 05:36 PM

If it makes you guys feel any better, I barked at a pedeadstrian in the bike lane today who wasn't paying attention on her cellphone. I think I scared her.

But seriously, if I see a big suv, or anything with tinted windows I assume the driver is a ******bag. and stay away.

sp00ki 07-24-07 05:40 PM

suv mirrors are the perfect size for uppercut practice, fyi.

squeakywheel 07-24-07 05:47 PM

Lucky for you that you're in a large metropolitan area. You won't see them again. After such an incident, I'd be psychoticly hunting them down.
