Money to save for a bike?

Hey all,

How much money should one save up before thinking about purchasing a new bike?
An aggressive commuter bike that is.

Should one save all the money and by all the bike parts at once or buy the bike part by part as money rolls in?

What sort of bike would one be getting with the following amount of cash?

$500 - $ 1000
$1000 - $ 1250
$1250 - $ 1500
$1500 - $ 2000
$2000+

Thanks!

$500-$1000 is plenty enough for a commuiter. Save the rest for the accessories that you'll need. Stuff like, full fenders, rack, panniers, bike computer, shoes, pedals, jerseys, shorts, rain gear... etc. etc.

List goes on.

the best option is usually to wait and keep your eyes on ebay/CL and buy parts as great deals come up over time

I buy parts as I find them for a price I like. It usually takes me a year to build a bike, but I have expensive tastes and not a whole lot of money. I usually buy some parts used if possible, or last years model.

I have two bikes that I have been gathering parts for over 6 months. It's a pretty frustrating way to build a bike, but I'm not made of money and these will be nice bikes built CHEAP.

you save money by buying a complete bike. but often there will be a few very undesirable parts in the mix.

Buy a Windsor Hour for $299.

Or, I have an old Atala frame that's a bit too small for me.

Ditto! I'm trying to build up my Special Ed IRO and a Custom Lugged CX Fixed frame and I have been gathering parts as I go along. I want to use the best parts I can for both and haven't even tallied up what I've spent so far.

I predict that the IRO will cost me about $1000 and the Custom will be about $1500-$1600

Yowza. My IRO will end up costing around $400 when all is said and done, but I think the only thing I still have to buy is a chain and bar tape. I'm stealing stuff from one of the other bikes I was hording parts for. I'll probably sell the other project frame to recoup most of what I spent on the IRO frame and call it a day.

This is true, however it gets you riding ASAP with few worries if you only have one bike.

Then you could swap out the undesirable parts "as money rolls in".
