Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I've never seen/heard of you on tuesdays or thursdays or any other ride or any other alleycat. And why would Eric at the Garage be willing to sell someone old parts if you striked up a conversation with him?

Anyone know anything about Jay's Pedal Power on girard? I heard they have a bunch of old parts that they keep in stock.

Critical mass and the July scavenger hunt. Will be participating much more in the fall (my bike is finally done). I also don't drink/am under 21 so some of the Alleycats don't fly with me.

Suggesting that the Garage owner may be wiling to sell old tools could be a way for the OP to get discounted items/bargains. You know, sometimes if you butter owners up, they'll be willing to sell you things for cheap (I got a Surly cog for $20 after bringing in my HED disc to "Show and tell"). The OP seems desperate to find deals in this city.

No hard feelings, again.

yeah, there's no reason to be riding your bike from one end of center city to the other more than once a day unless you're either a bike messenger or trying to look like one. How could anyone object to such sound reasoning?

I really dont enjoy bashing people online, I think its a waste of time... Peabody, overall I think people take issue with you because of the tone of your posts. You make yourself sound like you know everything about everything and put others down in the process. I know you made a post about being "nicer" or "more relevant" to topic, but really, its more about HOW you talk to people. I have gathered from your posts that you just moved to philly a few weeks ago (you had posted in june about not having moved to philly yet) and you are a young soon-to-be college student from the suburbs. That is great, many of us started out the same way. Your posts are informative but all that information is lost as soon as you start trying to put down others by calling them "hipsters" and "posengers" and making fun of them for coming in from the suburbs to ride (which is exactly what you were doing up until a few weeks ago).

congrats on getting into temple on full academic scholarship, that is very impressive (this is genuine by the way) but please, be a little humble to that fact that you will do (and already do - "disc wheel") a lot of dumb things and you do not know everything about everything. Again, I mean this to be constructive so you dont have to put people off everytime you post.

Of course, this is bikeforums so there will still be a lot of insulting, but I guess that can also be part of the fun.

Good luck!

Can you tell that I work with children?

Vegan? So a CheeseSTEAK, but no steak? I don't get it! I do adore Godivas, they melt in my mouth. So on that note, I AGREE!

--My comment about the "hard ass fixie girls" was me fondly recalling pulling up next to a girl listening to her iPod at full blast on Chestnut street. She was a tough chick, I think she had bigger guns than the dudes over at SWEAT. And I don't mean "Hard ass" in a bad way. Sorry, Lenore, Guin, and Laura.

--I (did edit) edit posts at phillyfixed because people take my comments way too seriously.

--I still heart my disc wheel. But if I were to do it again I'd just buy a pair of Deep Vs.

--I will be softer in tone and less condescending and/or scornful in my posts.

--I will represent this with a cutesy icon and user title

P.S. I love you all

what are you talking about, I'm a total hard ass. :-P
and Lenore doesn't even ride fixed (maybe I shouldn't blow her cover)

and Philly ruleZ so to the OP: where are you coming from? when are you gonna be here? such answers may help us tailor our responses to your situation. that sounded awkward.

Why do bike people have to bicker with each other to prove who's the more bikey of the bunch? I have been lazy attending rides and races myself but that doesn't mean I don't ride 7 days a week. Who cares? Everybody is ordered to give hugs and.... drink/smoke something together in celebration of bicyclility (wait, what?).

Oh and go to Gianna's by 6th and Lombard and get their peanut butter cup smoothie. It's so rich, you'll be thirstier after drinking it. And if you're looking for somewhere to go for fun at night instead of just hit bike shops and restaurants all day, there are tons of venues for bands or bars/clubs to hit up. r5productions.com, thetroc.com, johnnybrendas.com could get you started with music. And the list of bars and clubs is too enormous..
