Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

moving to philly....

ok, not me, my brother. he will be moving in over the weekend to chinatown and going to penn for grad school after being in iraq and abroad for a few years after college.

he has no car, a singlespeed mountainbike (old trek 820 home job, frankenbike of sorts) and a panasonic roadie (geared). any of you folks know a good bike shop he could get to on two wheels? he is new to the singlespeed world and may need some help from time to time as he dials in the trek, figures out some routes, etc.

Bicycle Therapy around 21 and South and Bicycle Revolutions at 4 and Bainbridge will keep him on two wheels. Also Trophy Bikes at 31 and Walnut, which is right on Penn's campus.

The community in philly, especially fixed, is strong as heck. There are many, many alleycats and rides. Among them are the August Summer Slam series coming up, the MS 150 Philly-to-shore ride in September, and the Bicycle Coalition sponsoring weekly rides. Oh, and Critical Mass, if you're into that.

THere are also plenty of home-grown fixie rides. Namely, water ice wednesdays, thrashin thursdays, and pretzel rides. A few of us from www.phillyfixed.com also gather sometimes and ride outside of these events.

I have seriously never seen you at any race or ride before. also, thrashin thursday and the pretzel ride are not fixed specific.

Lenore got on me for this already. Scavenger hunt in June and last Critical Mass, I was at. Of course I just moved into town from the burbs so it was impossible doing late-night rides or coming into town just for one group ride. Now my bike's done and I'm at school I'll be to basically every ride starting in September, and at least one Summer Slam.

Don't ask where the fixed-specific comment came from.

Hugs and kisses.

trying to hard there....

but back to the OP question. I would also like to re-suggest bike revolutions on 4th and bainbridge for any fixed/single speed bike work, bryan really knows what he's doing as is a great guy. bikeline is also good and if you get a complete bike from them, for an extra 50 bucks or something they will perform any work on it for 2 years? for free. tune ups, flat tires, truing, etc.

welcome to philly

yay philly. where's he moving from and what's he studying at penn?

I second all the comments above. the city is easy to get around, bike shops are plentiful and convenient, and bike church (co-op) is pretty much right on penn's campus if he wants to do some work on the bikes himself.

i think he could really get into doing some work himself, he just hasn't yet. likes getting his hands dirty though and seems interested in the stuff i have done.

he is studying land use/urban planning. where he is moving from is a good question.... he has a bunch of crap at our house in connecticut, but he was recently in iraq with the army for a year (he's out now) and before that lived in georgia (country, not state of) and a few other places.

I thought, what are the chances of that...
I'm in that program at Penn. I'll be part time this year and I avoid school like the plague so he might not see me much, but yeah, meyerson hall ftw (more like ftl).

I'm sure you're right, that was not what I meant. I'm just noting the large amount of, "Tell me everything there is to know about Philadelphia, PA." threads started lately.

I agree. Well, it is the **** for riding bikes, no doubt about it...people moving here want to be on the up and up and it ain't hard to do. I'm definitely not into the "bike culture" here outside of volunteering, but it's pretty easy to seek out, there's a lot going on.
