the bolts arent on backwards, the chainring is on the other side of the spider.

Psst.....mechanically it doesn't make a damned bit of difference which direction the bolts are facing, so long as they're tight.

i got sugino cranks and messenger chainring; my local guru (always brilliant) tells me it's usual that the chainring goes on the outside, but having mine on the inside makes the chainline nice and straight... am i abnormal?

I believe this is normal, but I don't own the cranks in question (Sugino RDs, I assume), so I can't say for sure.

Not at all. Good chainline is good chainline, however you get it. I ran the chainring on the inside of the spider on my Basso conversion for a long time until I switched it to singlespeed, at which time the freewheel moved the effective chainline out a few mm and it made more sense to run the chainring on the outside.

They're Sugino RDs and I've been running them that way for about 6 months (for chain line purposes)...no problems til this. I'll blame myself for not checking the bolts enough.
