my journey on the "surry ramble" (pics)
So me and ntfhdub01 made an impulsive decision and decided to drive out to surry virginia and ride the "surry ramble" road bike trail. I had read about it the day before in "road biking virginia" and upon internet research we found a map and directions and all. The trail is 31-38 miles long depending on whether you take the short cut or not, so we took the short cut. We didnt have a hell of a lot of time for the ride but we managed to do the 31 miles in about 2 hours and 15 minutes, which for the hilly terrain and fixed gear mode of transportation wasnt too bad. BUT if you ever take the ride bring lots of water, its tougher than you think, and also take your time. We made one stop for rest and i snapped these photos. thanks for reading, tim.

Those are some exciting corn shots!
|
surry is basically corn fields and the occasional truck flying by at 65.
|
Nice photos.

How far is Surry from say, Roanoke, and in which direction? If I'm at home in southern WV, I may pop over and do some riding (granted, it'll probably be on my road bike).

pats right
its about 45 minutes from where we live, so it was kinda worth it, but mostly just really long. where are you from pat? |
um, where I'm from in illinois we just call that 100s and 100s of miles of boring ass cornfields...we don't give it a cool name like the "surry ramble".
i'm just bustin ur balls. but seriously, riding out in the country is a very peaceful thing to do. I guess I'm blessed to have miles and miles of clear roads to ride with minimal traffic. |
country riding is great in oklahoma...you can usually find a well paved county road that connects to other well paved county roads and just fart around as long as you want. much better than the "take this highway to that highway" route so many of the roadies use here. and if you have a semi-cylcocross/rando/knobby-equipped-low-gear+fenders+rack bike like me you have unlimited options for bike exploring. and hardly any cars, except the few you encounter are dangerous as hell so its best to get off the road 'til they pass you.
looks like a nice kinda place to ride...alot like the wichita mountains bike route in oklahoma, the one that is far away from everyone but really great riding so everyone drives to get there anyway, plus you get to finish it off with a climb up Mt. Scott, which will probably leave most city/fixed gear riders completely beat and bonked. the view from the top is pretty nice though, as is the breeze. i never make it without taking it extremely slow and steady...i'm the worst rider you know. |
same reason people ride deep vs through corn fields
|
doofo, i figured it wasnt worth it.
Theres no reason. Its like, why do anything? |
I am so getting something with corn in it for lunch now!!!
Why am I so easily swayed by what I see. That wasn't even an ad. |
