places to live in pittsburgh

so im going to grad school at CMU and was wondering what are good neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. Someplace bike vegan anarchist whatever friendly. Im moving from Philly, and I'm thinking someplace similar to university city near clark park area.

also, this is a serious rush thing for me, so if anyone has a couch I could crash on for a few days till i find a place i'd love that. i don't take up much space. everything i own fits into my messenger bag.

Oakland or Shadyside

Congrats! Oakland and Shadyside are the standard college haunts, but pretty much anywhere in the East End is easily doable by bike - Lawrenceville, Friendship, Bloomfield are all good options also (Bloomfield is pretty close to university city prior to the gentrification). If you're looking for a roommate or more info, take a look at board.nevertellmetheodds.org - messageboard that deals with most things pgh.

Mmmmm, this talk of Pittsburgh has me craving Primantis. MMmmm Knockwurst cheese and egg.........MMmmm

Sorry long ride before work this morning and I'm hungry.

I don't live there, so don't take my word for it, but I really liked Shadyside when I was up there last weekend. Oh PGH I miss you...

not sure shadyside is very anarchist friendly, but it is nice -- look across the boulevards: there are great places in friendship & bloomfield.

also check out squirrel hill regent square & the northside.

Avoid S. Oakland at all costs. It's not as bad as my college town, but you'll definitely get your fix of college ****** bags. Bloomfield for the win!

Pittsburgh

I sure enjoyed 4 years in Squirrel Hill when I lived there. Everything is convenient and several buses (I took 61-C) will take you right to CMU or Pitt. My wife (to-be at that time -- we got married in the 'burgh right across from CMU as a matter of fact) lived in Bloomfield and loved it. The riding in the area can be fun as well, so long as you avoid pot holes on some of the back streets. You'll like it there.

Friendship gets my endorsement. Shadyside living for ~$300 less per month. Plus, if you decide to kick that pesky veganism, you're equidistant between Tessaro's and The Sharp Edge (mmm.....burgers).

There are a few other places I'd live in PGH (Lawrenceville, Strip District, etc.), but getting to Oakland on two human-powered wheels would require at least a Powerbar, if not severe blood doping.

I use to live in Bloomfield. It was the best spot I had in PGH. I also lived in a BEAUTIFUL loft downtown right before I moved. It was suprisingly cheap, like 700 or somthing for a huge warehouse. It was in the Cultural District if I recal, by the Theatre. Also, the Heinz Lofts were a new cool place that was going up. Its right over a bridge on the Northside, which includes every amenety you could think of.

HTH, yinz.

eh, fifth/forbes or liberty aren't gonna kill yinz, the drivers may, but the hill is doable.
