Compatible bottom bracket size for Suntour Superbe Pro Cranks (165)?

I'm looking to purchase a p.w. ti bottom bracket for suntour's superbe pro track crankset (165mm), but can't seem to find the appropriate spindle length online.
i'm assuming it's going to be the typical 110, but i don't want to take any chances... does anyone know of a resource that can help me line everything up properly, or know off hand what spindle works with that crankset?

Thanks...

nevermind, business cycles hid it.

Suntour Superbe Pro 109 mm Symmetrical

which seems to eliminate phil wood bb as a candidate... anyone have experience with suntour superbe pro on phil wood ti bb?

Phil Wood would be viable, due to the adjustable chainline. There's been arguments for ages as to what the actual taper of Superbe Pro BB's is, and I can't remember ever seeing what I'd consider to be an authoritative opinion one way or the other -- most people run Superbe Pro BB's with SP cranks.

everything i'm reading makes me feel that i should go with 108mm, standard jis.

y/n?

goldenskeletons 08-20-07 04:07 PM

i've got a hatta 9400 or whateveritscalled on my superbes. 109mm!

sp00ki 08-20-07 04:17 PM

from phil wood and them:

Hello

The 5mm of adj. is done via the mounting rings 2.5mm of adj. per side. Yes 108 should be good, I did
a quick search and could not find which taper you need, JIS or ISO. if you find that info you should be set.

Thanks greg
That's a start. No specifics, but i know i'm at least pointed in the right direction...

goldenskeletons, what taper do those run, btw? jis standard, or low profile?

goldenskeletons 08-20-07 04:30 PM

heh heh... honestly? i don't have the slightest idea. i remember the jis/iso taper argument thread a long time back and i sorta quietly ducked out of that one. if i had to give you an uneducated guess, i'd say its the same deal as the sugino 75's. ...which are jis?

but if the phils work, i'd say run with 'em! you'll get more street use out of 'em if you should so choose by not going loose ball. ...or you just won't feel as guilty about it!

A note on Superbe Pro BBs: Suntour used a weird taper for their Superbe Pro BBs of the time. The closest match other than a Superbe Pro BB would be Campagnolo square taper, from what I understand. I think this is the approach that Phil Wood recommends.

Hatta BB works, used them on my LEVEL ,no issues at all.

Do you know what taper these were? and what size spindle?

fixedpip 08-21-07 07:21 AM

Theres only one common Hatta track BB (the R9400). Its 109mm and symmetrical. What the taper is god knows though as its not listed (always just states NJS like thats any help) - I'd assume they were JIS tapers though.

But I'd always thought the Sugino 75 BB were JIS and I was wrong there.

Stop going into fine details about where it tapers.

It works and as no issues. I will mount it on my S75 and see if any issues tonight.

Similar topic - to get a 42mm chainline (used on fixed gear of course) will the bb required for the Superbe Pro Road Double crankset be the same for the track crankset? The inner ring would be at 41mm and the outer ring at 46mm (chainlines). It seems for the outer ring to be used as the single ring, and to achieve a 42mm chainline, one would want to use a 107mm bb as Sheldon Brown states the Superbe Pro road double requries a 111mm Campy taber bb - right?

Any thoughts?

I run my Superbe Pro track canks with Centaur or Veloce level 111mm BB's.

using a spindle that is 4 mm shorter is only going to move your chainline 2 mm inboard. remember, there are two ends of a spindle.

try a 103.

parkerlewis 09-20-07 09:48 AM

every keirin bike I have had with sp cranks has had a hatta 7400 bb and 1 or 2 njs dura bb when it came from the pro rider.
I have never even seen a superbe njs bb. very rare compared with the cranks which are reasonably common.
