I just came into a bunch of money, and while yes I could save it, or do something responsible with it, I'd rather build myself a new bike. EAI bareknuckle is really looking good but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost to myself. I want to start riding track but also want a worth street ride, bareknuckle looks like a good compromise. My bike is my primary form of transportation. So the question is; how much did you guys spend on your bikes? This is pretty much 100% expendable income as I didn't work for it, and make enough at work to support myself anyway so I'm not in any sort of financial situation. Frame and fork are 600, I would probably pick up a new headset and wheel set as well. Total probably close to $900. Is that too much to spend on an incomplete bike? Or is that kind of par for the course for a high quality bike? Headset would either be an IRD or a Chris King, and the wheel set would be Miche's laced to Deep-Vs. Thoughts?

Trust me, it's rare. I work full time and go to school full time. Which is why I want to treat myself. I just sold my Guitar and Amp for $1000, and I make enough at work that school isn't a problem or anything. Don't get the wrong idea, I don't have a silver spoon in mouth or anything like that. I work like a dog.

Define "a bunch of money". Since you're asking if $900 is too much, it can't be THAT much money. Knowing how much expendable dough you have may help the peanut gallery determine if $900 is or is not too much. FWIW, my conversion cost about $200 to build, and my IRO (yes, including frame/fork) was just under $250.

I know how the full time work and school thing goes. I say no worries on spending the grand on a bike if that's your new hobby. I have a similar pattern as well, when I change hobbies I sell the old stuff to finance the new stuff.

i know. i've read your other posts. just saying it must be nice to come across some easy cash. check out my flickr link. my gray fuji cost me ~450 to build. i think it looks good, it's all i need, and it gets ridden about 15 to 25 miles a day.

+1 for that! Hence why the guitar and amp are gone... I've been into bikes since I was about 7, but am just starting to get serious. Want to do track and stuff, looks like so much fun.

I spent $650 on my Pista, but have previously spent $2k on a mountain bike (Santa Cruz Heckler). I think spending the money on a bike is well worth it. Its something that will last for a long time provided you take care of it, and the health benefits and fun and social aspects of it are well worth the price. I go to school full time and work two jobs as well, so I know how nice it is to come into some expendable income and spend it on something you'll really enjoy.

about 5 bills, including powdercoat. I have like 5 stems and 3 sets of handlebars, and a few seats, and 2bbs, and a crankset now, though. all from trying out different stuff. I don't ride track (I Wish) though.

My current fixie cost me... well, let's see: $350 for the bike, $75 for the pedals and straps, and $30 for the bars. So that's... $455. It's a Mercier Kilo TT (https://velospace.org/node/4403).

My previous fixie cost me... about the same, methinks. Wheels cost (($75x2)+($30+2)+($25x2)+$25+$5)=$290 (don't EVER do wheels that way... I bought hubs separate, rims separate, a cog separate, and a lockring separate, and then had my LBS build 'em up for me), $100 for the frame, $75 for the powder coat, and $10 for the bullhorns; everything else I had. That's... $475. It was a Nishiki International conversion, now owned by BF forum member ovoleg (https://velospace.org/node/572). 'Course, that doesn't include the Dawes Lightning SST that I bought as a parts-seed, nor the Bianchi Strada LX frame that I sought to use before the Nishiki that was too small. So add a couple of hundred dollars more if you want the true cost of that bike.

Do it. I just spent $400 on an entry level complete track bike after riding dumpster conversions for 2 years, and I couldn't be happier. Just don't build up something that you're afraid to ride because it's too pretty or whatever. If you're gonna use it, it's not a waste.

I just spent a total of $4 on my conversion. Found the bike down the road and needed to replace the bottom bracket bearings.

good parts cost that big cash. this forum is full of people talking about sweet phil woods and chris kings and sugino 75's and brooks or whatever... when you do a fat build, that **** costs dough. is it worth it? probably. cars are way expensive, plus 50 a tank and 100 in insurace a month. drop that dough on your bike. You love it right? You're on a forum talking about it so i'm sure you do. my bike was 1500, no corners cut. and I ride it like a mother****er. Spend your cash. get a good ass lock. get renter's insurance in case it gets jacked. build the best bike you can afford.

my trek cost $20 and i traded some parts for my wheelset. remember, more money does not necessarily mean more satisfaction. people continuously spend buttloads of money on their bikes and are never happy.
