Trust me when i say that most vegans are such more because of the horrendously inhumane state of the factory farming industry than the ecological impact of said industry. |
http://www.psywarrior.com/argue.gif "SYNTHETIC IS WORSE!" "NO, LEATHER IS WORSE! "I LOVE EATING COWS HIPPIE!" "YOU ALWAYS TALK ABOUT EATING MEAT!" "YEAH CUZ SYNTHETIC IS BAD!" "NO, LEATHER IS WORSE!" ..... |

but when a vegan asks a question about a saddle it seems all the cheese-eaters on the internet are lining up to brag about eating meat. |

I'm only vegan because it makes me feel superior to other people.
At least, thats how it started. Now I actually don't like meat. Kinda like the way I started riding a bike just to look cool and now I actually like riding bikes. [edit] Thats actually not true. You know, the part about liking to ride bikes. |
About those brooks seats, why are they so expensive? and are they when you sit on them like sitting like bricks? also who makes velo seats?

Synth saddles
www.sbrsports.com/287-0 for saddles & this is one I thought looked ok>> www.sbrsports.com/289-430939...

I've always liked the look of the Serfas kevlar saddles. They pop up on ebay every once in a while. Can't speak for the comfort factor but they seem to have firm padding similar to a Flite.
The Tioga Spider (sp?) is another interesting looking saddle, but seems way expensive for what it is. |
OT but I wonder if anyone has custom seats made, or if this idea is even feasible. It would be kinda cool to have a piece of (possibly slightly padded) carbon fiber molded in the exact shape of your ischial tuberosities.

and everyone comes in talking about eating steaks and burgers (i had one tonight) because everyone else gets ***** hurt about it. |

I like to go skiing up in truckee, and guess what, NO resturaunt will take reservations under the name "donner" anymore  I dint do it (all anyway :D) ok basically you can't win, either an animal gets skinned or the earth explodes either way you go, so I would go with the smallest butt-print (:D ) and keep the saddle you have now, and go do some VOLUNTEER WORK to save the planet. I wonder "how vegan" are you? no honey? or yeast breads? eggs? things baked in gas ovens? see how many petrodons had to die, JUST to bake your vegan cookie? (sorry couldn't resist) :D *by the way, if you're vegan and haven't eaten at MILLENIUM restaurant in San Francisco,...don't die until you do, trippy thing is the head chef Eric Tucker, is NOT even a vegetarian, much less vegan. |
It is truly amazing that all the meat eaters and vegan cheaters break in to assert their opinions and ignore the OP's question. Coming in and looking at this archived thread, it's very annoying. I want a reference and instead I get a bunch of comedians with low self esteem trying in vain to be funny. It was painful trying to cull information from this thread.
I am vegan. I'm not offended by meat&cheese-eaters making meat&cheese-eating jokes; I also am not going to be swayed by some vegetarian/vegan who tries to convince me that it is okay to cheat here or there (I cheat too, but why in the hell would I encourage some stranger to? That just doesn't make sense.) And the people who are preaching and being "political" are those who are bullying the rest of the world to conform. Someone looking for a vegan saddle is not telling you to go vegan or to feel guilty for eating cheese. And yes, some vegans think they're better than meat-eaters, but in my experience (and as evidenced by this thread) the converse is almost always true and meat-eaters are more in-your-face and vicious about it. When someone wants info on something, help them out or don't. His question was not, "What are the merits of vegan saddles and veganism in general?" This is not a lifestyle or philosophical forum. Just because synthetic may arguably be worse for the world does not make it vegan. And any good saddle, regardless of material will last plenty long if you take care of it. I have a crappy velo saddle that lost some of its cover and looks pretty bad but works/feels fine after who-knows-how-many idiotic owners mistreated it. So, if possible (and it is), let's stick to the vegan saddle thread (now that this declaration gives me the last say ;-) I, too have been looking into vegan saddles- I'm not sure how to ensure a saddle is 100% vegan, and specs don't get too specific (ironically), so I've narrowed it down to synthetic covers. I have the saddle that came with my bianchi san jose. It appears to be vegan (I have no specs, but there's no leather). It's very ugly (shag leopard print down the middle) but comfy up to 50 miles. I see 'em on ebay fairly often and it should be cheap (stock on a $560 bike). However, I'd like a more comfy one for double centuries. This is what I've found: The soma ensho and kamisori (only the brown color is leather) (http://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...?category=3466) I rode my friend's kamisori and it was not comfy, but that's a personal choice. Universal cycles sells both saddles $20 cheaper than most. Selle san marco has a large range of synthetic saddles (not all, though- they list the materials) The aspide and rever are under $100 and all over ebay used and new. Fizik also has many synthetic saddles- arione seems nice and abounds on ebay. I've also noticed that riding fixed you tend to sit on the nose and move around the saddle more than with a geared bike, so you may want to look at tri saddles with more cushioning on the nose (though they're heavier). Also, the selle san marco caymano (synthetic) is designed to allow the rider to slide fore and aft. The ensho also seems to have some good cushioning on the nose (and is lighter than the kamisori). The soma saddles' rails are also cro-mo which is more eco-groovy than titanium (but obviously heavier). I will post a review of the saddle I end up with. |
