Mobile dooring?

This is less about a dooring and more about use of a vehicle as a weapon. About a week ago I was riding to a Performance store which had just opened up about 10 miles away with some friends. Some dumbass kids thought it was a good idea to open their doors while driving at about 30 to either knock us off our bikes or "teach us a lesson" about why we shouldn't ride on the road. I kept wishing they would hit something and loose a limb from the door closing on it...

Is there anything illegal about what they did? I kept thinking I should have stopped and written down their plate and phoned the police.

No. In fact it was pretty high traffic due to construction so probably around 20 people saw this happen. It doesn't help that many other people probably thought those kids were doing the right thing, because we kept getting yelled at the whole trip.

Reckless endangerment, reckless driving, assault and various other charges. They would probably go to jail for that; not just a fine.

EDIT: I have only been yelled at one time, and it was by some stupid lady that thought I cut her off. In fact she was just about to head into one way oncoming traffic and I was turning down the street she was suppose to turn down.

I know if I ever have that done to me, I'd be on the phone with 911 in a hot ****ing second. If I got them at a red, there would be a confrontation.

Anyway, maybe this eases you rage: OUCH

Much of the time we were "passing" on the right in our lane because traffic was so start and stop. None of us wanted to call the cops for something that was possibly not really illegal and then implicate ourselves for sharing the road.

I remember seeing that a long time ago. The title was white people are shouldn't ghost ride. He was clearly trying to door someone and then fell out. Got what he deserved. Oh beautiful irony.

Passing on the right is both illegal and dangerous. Passing on the right will get you killed eventually. You are much better off waiting or splitting lanes.

Hell yeah. But I bet there's very little the police can do and therefore will want to do if there's no contact or injury. It's one of those awkward am-I-being-a-lame-scold-or-preventative-hero decisions and you'll never know until the police get there and are either supportive or dismissive. You could just stop in and file a report with a desk sergeant, might be a little less awkward--but a desk sergeant can't chase them down/spot them and warn at them. That's awful, btw. What they did. Pretty scary.

how the hell do their sandals slide that well? i don't believe that would be possible w/the friction unless they make their roads out of oil.

When roads get really hot they get really slick. Oils seep up to the surface. This is one of the main reasons why when it rains in Vegas, so many accidents happen. That and stupid people.

I had a bunch of kids in a jalopy open their back door and slam on the brakes after narrowly passing me once, but I was able to avoid it. They sped off before I could catch them.

This came up obliquely on that other dooring thread just now. I think it's important to find out, especially since so many of us exploit, uh, grey zones. INAL, BUT, it is my understanding you can very rarely implicate yourself--get a jerk officer, yes, or maybe give the other side a mitigating factor--but bodily harm trumps just about everything. You can be being the biggest ass in the world, it gives no one the right, or, to put it another way, does not excuse, assault, bodily harm, etc. If I'm not mistaken, it's part and parcel of the theory that the state has monopoly powers over violence (and detention). I'm not trying to be rhetorical here, I think this is the general law. If there is a lawyer out there, it'd be cool to know.

I guess the decision can be, if rent is due and you can't afford a no helmet or brake or some such nonsense ordinance fine, can you stomach that fine--but you won't be the bad guy.

Really? I have never heard of this before. I know passing on the right is illegal in a car, but have never thought twice about passing on the right near the curb as long as I could be sure no one was making a right turn.
So in a typical scenario where you are riding as far right as possible to let faster moving traffic pass, but then come up on a quarter mile of stopped traffic waiting on a light you would either sit there at the back and wait a few rotations of the light to get though or hop over and pass everyone on the left side before cutting back to the far right side of the right lane on the far side of the light? How about others here, how do you handle situations like that?

Interesting view...

The whole thing about "passing" is that when it comes to bikes and cars, no one really views it as passing. It's as if there's an invisible, phantom bike lane, which is why cars have no problem driving side by side in the same lane when traffic is 15-20mph. If they're not doing that then they're gunning it trying to make a real pass, then slamming on their brakes to not hit the next car in front. Following the letter of the law and forgoing splitting doesn't solve the issue, because drivers are always infuriated whenever I take the lane (resulting in very agressive behavior on their part).

It's also the attitudes of the drivers in specific areas. When I ride around in the University Circle area (Case Western, CIA, and CIM campus) where I live, people are generally much more accepting of cyclists on the road. As soon as I leave the area (like on that day) I get a lot of crap from idiots.

I've done this a lot because of a lack of space on the right, and it's a scary situation when the light turns green and you're still on the left.
