BMX type Helmets

I've been thinking about getting a helmet after crashing last week(didn't hit my head, but still...) What does everyone think about a bmx type helmet? do they protect your head as good as a roadie helmet? Does your head get really sweaty?

I did try out a roadie helmet at my lbs but after looking at the mirror WOW I look friggin ridiculous. I guess those helmets don't look good on big heads like me.

It looked as ridiculous as this:

Is this helmet any good?

I <3 my BMX helmet. Well really I like the color and the shape, but it kind of slides around because there's no adjuster to keep it in place.

Ooh btw I started a thread about helmets you should read.

If you're not worried about ventilation, i don't see an issue.

SSSasky 08-30-07 05:53 PM

They're definitely just as safe - they have to pass the same safety certifications. And generally, the thicker plastic shell gives the expanded foam a bit more protection from day-to-day bumping and banging (although these are still single impact helmets).

B<X style helmets are generally of pretty low quality so in addition to lacking ventilation they don't stay put as well. The more expensive ones are probably better but I don't really know.

The newer Pro-Tec's actually fit well and don't move around on the head much. That would be my recommendation if you're going to go this route.

Caveat: They fit well if you size them properly. Go to the LBS.

we all generally look kind of silly when biking, I'd go with a road helmet. I personally think the ones with visors look a bit less silly and I like the visor for sun and rain, but they are kind of passe here and on the road forum. I suppose I could deal with a BMX lid for short hop commuting but it would take me about 3 miles to want some air in there.

BLIMP 08-30-07 07:16 PM

Oh, and another little plus to the bmx style helmets... they won't allow your ear to be torn off as easily.

The round helmets are safer than the super aero, lance armstrong helmets. No snag points in the rear.

And the main reason to buy Pro-Tec is... Delta Force uses them!!!!:p

haha, nice (edit: Minus the Hitlerism)

BlickBlocks. I saw that you had a sewing machine in your other thread. Back in the day when even good foam road helmets were still really bad, I used to sew a 1" strap of elastic between the two back helmet straps so they ran more or less paralell down the back of my head to the base of the skull, then connected with clasps under the chin as normal (insead of "V-ing" straight to my ears).
It was a primitive helmet retention system, but it worked and may work for your BMX lid to keep it from sliding around.

i have a lance armstrong helmet now... it's SO much nicer having airflow.

if you bang your helmet around a lot, throwing it down when you get home, setting it on the floor at places of business/class... consider getting a bmx/skate helmet. if you want to not get soaked in sweat, spandex-compliment helmets look kinda cool without the spandex.

The Ironman branded helmets, as well as some others from the same manufacturer, have a plastic shell all the way under the edge of the helmet, which really helps with the getting kicked around on the floor durability. They look like any other helmet, the ironman logo will come off though not easily. No visors though.

dirtyphotons 08-31-07 09:14 AM

vpower did a triathlon last year in a bmx helmet and a speedo.

that's all i got.

cc700 08-31-07 09:21 AM

i don't really have an ironman helmet i was just using the diminutive term as a generic weight weenie roadie style helmet.

it's actually a speicalized aurora. very similar construction, plastic poly shell with foam. very light. scary light actually.

What's you other helmet, a white hood?

(I call Godwin's Law, BTW)

cc700 08-31-07 09:49 AM

good call.

i too was offended at the need of the ss symbol. there are plenty of war helmets that don't represent genocide and hate.(ibsomevegancallsallwargenocidenhate)

Landgolier 08-31-07 09:53 AM

Right, I was just saying the ironmans are good for having ventilation but still being able to take some coffee shop floor abuse.

I don't get excited about helmet weight, any of the normal $30-40 road helmets are going to weigh from 260 to 290g in med-large sizes. The lightest $189 stuff out there might drop 50g -- for $150, I'll deal with the extra 2 ounces somehow.

Retem 08-31-07 01:55 PM

I like bmx helmets as well i the winter I wear a fullface it keeps the rain and leaves from hitting me in the face and I have one of those half helmets made by azonic and it has speakers in it no more tickets for wearing headphones while riding

I wear BMX helmets for most of my riding and have done for the last 6 or so years. I was after a new helmet and just for the sake of it tried on a KB Jumper. It immediately seemed to feel stronger and more solid than a standard microshell and is perfectly smooth, so there are no snag points. I'm not sure whether they technically are safer or not, but I certainly feel safer wearing one. I know some people arn't too keen on the look of them, but I wear a helmet purely for safety reasons for protection, so looks arn't a concern to me. It is warmer than a helmet with hundreds of vents, but as I feel it protects me more, I can live with that.

I've since had a Bell Faction and now wear an awesomely comfortable TSG Evolution, which covers even more of my head than the Jumper did, which I like.

There's a guy around town that wears one and that must explain why his hair is so frizzed out. Those things are unbelievably hot in the summer, which lasts 6 months here.
